About The Position

This position is for a Research Faculty Appointment in Translational Molecular Pathology. The role involves performing various assays to study disease biology and characterize biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and monitoring. The individual will also be involved in developing new molecular assays, evaluating and cataloging pathology samples, preparing reagents, and presenting research findings. This role requires adherence to institutional rules, OSHA regulations, good laboratory practices, and HIPAA. Marginal functions include reading scientific literature, collaborating with other investigators, using computers for data recording and presentations, and performing library work.

Requirements

  • Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role, department mission.
  • At least 2 years postdoctoral experience preferred (unless not required for discipline) or equivalent time as a basic scientist.
  • Good visual skills and knowledge of the various chemicals, reagents and dyes.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and understandable manner.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assays for cellular toxicity, fluorescence microscopy, protein complex purification from cultured cells, biochemical assays for ubiquitin and RNA substrate binding, DNA break repair assays, biochemical reconstitution assays, RNA-sequencing, DNA replication and genome stability assays, protein and nucleic acid analyses, including spatial analyses, from pathology tissues to reveal disease biology and enable characterization of biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis and disease monitoring.
  • Develop molecular assays for early cancer diagnosis and disease monitoring in reference to immune and genomic biomarkers in oligometastatic genitourinary tumors.
  • Comply with institutional rules that follow OSHA regulations.
  • Evaluate pathology samples collected for research in collaboration with a clinical pathologist.
  • Maintain records of patient informed consents.
  • Contact outside pathology institutions when needed.
  • Maintain good records of incoming samples.
  • Follow good laboratory practices and HIPPA when dealing with pathology samples.
  • Weigh, mix, and aliquot a variety of chemicals, reagents, and dyes, some of which are noted as toxic and/or carcinogenic.
  • Use standard laboratory equipment such as magnetic mixers, pH meters, balances, centrifuges, pipetters, water baths, etc.
  • Travel to scientific meetings as necessary to present results of experiments.
  • Make ready results for publications of manuscript/abstracts.
  • Prepare for publication in peer review scientific journals.
  • Maintain meticulous records of experimental data and protocols.
  • Use computer analysis to provide slides and graphs of data.
  • Communicate in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Read scientific articles and references.
  • Communicate and collaborate verbally and in print with other investigators at UTMDACC and other institutions.
  • Use computer to record data and prepare presentations of data.
  • Read and retain knowledge of instructions for all machines and equipment utilized in the laboratory.
  • Prepare and edit manuscripts, scientific presentations and abstracts.
  • Do library work such as searches and retrievals, use of TexSearch, BRS Colleague, etc.
