About The Position

The Department of Recreation Studies is recruiting an instructor for the following courses: RECR 1166 Valuing Diversity in Recreation (Spring 2027), RECR 1001 Contemporary Issues and Trends in Community Recreation (Spring 2027), and RECR 1002 Integrative Praxis in Community Recreation (Summer 2027). A successful applicant new to the LFA employment group may be entitled to begin December 1, 2026, to allow for course preparation and set-up prior to the start of classes. The successful candidate is a recognized leader in Community Recreation and is prepared to actively promote the Recreation Leadership Diploma and Bachelor of Recreation Management to potential students. In addition, the successful candidate will have the desire and administrative and leadership skills to take on leadership roles within the Department such as Program Coordinator and/or Department Chair. While applications for individual courses will be considered, preference will be given to the candidate able to teach all of the courses listed above.

Requirements

  • Minimum Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) Leisure Studies, Recreation, Leadership, Adult Education, Public Adminstration or related field.
  • Has worked in the field of Community Recreation for a minimum of 5 years (full time or equivalent) at a management level or above
  • Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in his/her work as well as being well connected within the field participating in professional associations, board membership and/or community organizations.
  • Applicants must have experience facilitating or teaching adult learners in the recreation environment.
  • Employees of Langara College must reside in British Columbia
  • Applicants must be willing to work in a collaborative faculty team environment and participate in related departmental and college-wide activities.
  • The successful instructor will engage in building a positive learning community within their course and achieve innovative ways of connecting theory to practical situations for learners.
  • Candidates are required to have participated in a variety of recreation experiences that are related to their area of expertise and demonstrate a passion for (and leadership in) community recreation.
  • The successful candidate understands and is dedicated to community recreation and is able to clearly articulate his/her recreation and teaching philosophy.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have postsecondary teaching experience (on-line, mixed mode or classroom).

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the preparation and delivery of lecture material; the design, set-up, and delivery of group and individual activities; and the preparation, delivery, and grading of assignments and exams
  • Utilize digital technology to deliver the course material such as Brightspace, Zoom, etc.
  • Utilize technology for administrative purposes such as Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, Zoom etc.
  • Maintain regular weekly office hours on campus and online for student advising and participation in related departmental and college-wide activities.
  • Maintain currency in relevant subject areas, including global and/or local trends, issues, and opportunities
  • Maintain collegial working relationships
  • As appropriate, actively seek opportunities to integrate students and learning into organizations and/or the community
  • On an as needed basis, participate actively in program design and review
