About The Position

The Center for Academic Excellence/Writing Center (CAE/WC) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a faculty member to teach academic, scientific, and professional writing and academic skills to graduate students, primarily in health care and biomedical science. The role involves scheduled one-on-one sessions (online and in-person) for writing and academic skills instruction. The faculty member will also conduct seminars on studying, test-taking, and writing skills for academic and professional success for students and faculty across six colleges. This position offers a rewarding career focused on teaching advanced, motivated students one-on-one, collaborating with colleagues, and potentially exploring interests in medical or health humanities.

Requirements

  • A master's degree or higher in composition, rhetoric, education, or related fields.
  • At least two years of teaching experience in a one-on-one or classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor graduate students.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with 8 other faculty and staff members.

Nice To Haves

  • A doctoral degree in composition, rhetoric, education, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to individualized writing or learning center pedagogy.
  • Awareness of current trends and scholarship around the teaching of writing and learning science.
  • Experience/training in providing instruction for academic success, academic counseling, and/or teaching students for whom English is an additional language.
  • Experience with students or professionals in health care or related science disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Teach academic, scientific, and professional writing to graduate students.
  • Teach academic skills such as test-taking strategy, board prep, and active learning study strategies.
  • Conduct scheduled one-on-one teaching sessions with students, both online and in person.
  • Conduct seminars on studying, test taking, and writing skills for academic and professional success.
  • Collaborate with other CAE/WC faculty to enhance student writing and learning.
  • Explore opportunities in medical or health humanities if interested.
