This course introduces the foundations of music psychotherapy practice by exploring diverse client populations across different lifespans, diagnoses, and cultural orientations. Students will integrate knowledge of human development, psychopathology, and major diagnostic categories. The course emphasizes therapeutic competencies and interventions for culturally relevant and ethical clinical practice. It will examine current theories practiced in Ontario, comparing them with music psychotherapy practices and common theories, approaches, and treatment models. The course addresses the needs of diverse client populations through case studies, readings, and experiential demonstrations, while also discussing the limitations of music psychotherapy and the therapist's role relative to other health professionals. Students will also learn to recognize the impact of oppression, power, and social injustice on clients and the therapeutic process. This course prepares students for MU504, their first clinical placement.
