The biological complexity of music and its relational effects on the brain is garnering much attention in the scientific community. This seminar outlines the key neurological processes that take place when one is engaged with music, in listening, participating, and/or creating. With a focus on scientific discoveries in the past decade, students become familiar with the latest findings, including exploring questions such as: Does music have a role in human survival? Can it promote the promotion of social cohesion? Is there a “centre” for music in the brain? What exactly happens neurologically when engaging in music? What is the role of various musical elements such as frequency? Students are given opportunities to reflect their own research in collaborative contexts with peers and faculty.
