About The Position

The City of Torrance is recruiting for Instructor I positions to join their Cultural Services team. The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation. The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs and facilities for all those who live, learn, work and play in the City of Torrance. The mission of the Cultural Services Division is to strengthen the City of Torrance as a unique center for cultural programs, the arts and arts education through developing the Torrance Cultural Arts Center as a unified campus for learning and excellence; providing classes, programs, and events that enrich the community through arts training and instruction for all levels of learning; creating new arts experiences and attracting new audiences; serving the unique needs of artists, connecting their work to the public and developing unique artistic resources of and for this community. This position is currently looking for a Pianist. The Instructor I reports directly to a full time Cultural Services professional. Instructor I position differs from Instructor II based on the position requirements as well as the tenure of the instructor. The Instructor I position differs from the Program Specialist in that the Instructor I primarily teaches classes and does not serve as a staff generalist.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year.
  • Four of the five years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school.
  • Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.
  • No specific minimum of education.
  • Knowledge of Latest state-of-the-art of specialized subject area
  • Knowledge of Techniques of instruction
  • Knowledge of Basic First Aid
  • Ability to Develop lesson plans independently
  • Ability to Follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to Write required reports
  • Ability to Implement department's philosophy of recreation
  • Ability to Learn, monitor, and enforce departmental policies and procedures including health and safety rules
  • Ability to Evaluate class activities to assess class/program effectiveness
  • Ability to Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel
  • Ability to Demonstrate expertise as required in specialty area

Responsibilities

  • Submits classes to be offered to the Classes Supervisor or Program Coordinator and reviews class offerings for accuracy
  • Prepares lesson plans and plans, organizes, instructs, and directs classes in a specialized discipline or topic
  • Conducts demonstrations/presentations to students
  • Evaluates student level of ability to develop appropriate lesson plans and to modify instruction plan during class based on student need
  • Evaluates progress of student/class
  • Prepares course materials and instructional aids
  • Sets up audiovisual equipment for instructional purposes
  • May on occasion provide direction to assistants
  • Prepares activity and other reports
