About The Position

SOWELA Technical Community College is seeking an Instructor for English within the School of Arts & Sciences. This is an unclassified, 9-month faculty appointment. The instructor will be responsible for utilizing the approved curriculum, developing course objectives, and ensuring content is current. Duties include maintaining accurate classroom records, supporting department assessment initiatives, using and updating the course management system, and meeting deadlines for student evaluations and grade submissions. Courses may be taught at the main campus in Lake Charles and/or satellite campuses. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Master's Degree or Doctoral in English OR master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in English is required.
  • All positions require superior communication skills, the ability to relate to students, other faculty, and college staff, and the ability to handle a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • The successful applicant will be a team player, have strong leadership skills, and possess a high-energy level with a positive attitude.
  • Applicants must meet credentialing guidelines for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
  • Passing pre-employment criminal background screen is required as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • The ability to assist students with college-readiness skills is desired.
  • Experience in post-secondary teaching is preferred.
  • Experience in distance-learning experience is preferred.
  • Experience in teaching hybrid and/or compressed video courses is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the approved curriculum.
  • Develops clearly stated course objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Ensures the objectives and content of the courses taught are current.
  • Keeps accurate classroom records.
  • Supports department assessment initiatives.
  • Uses and updates the required course management system.
  • Meets deadlines and evaluates student work in a timely manner including submitting Show/No Show reports, midterm grades, and final grades.
  • Courses will be taught at main campus in Lake Charles and/or satellite campuses as needed.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
