About The Position

The University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Math & Science Department is seeking applications for two Chemistry Instructor positions. This is a permanent, tenure-track position within the Math & Sciences Department. The position is contingent on course offerings and student demand, with an anticipated start date of approximately January 2027. The role involves designing, delivering, and assessing instruction in Chemistry lectures and labs, developing course content and materials, and integrating various skills into instruction. Non-teaching duties include service to the department and college, professional development, and scholarly activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry; OR Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Geochemistry, Chemical Oceanography, Organic Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, Chemical Physics, or Environmental Chemistry with 18 credits of advanced coursework in Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful teaching of courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, or biochemistry at the post-secondary level, as substantiated by student and peer assessments.
  • Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators.
  • Evidence of experience integrating scientific writing, technology, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking into chemistry instruction.
  • Ability to write clear prose as substantiated by an attached one to two-page statement and/or publication.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deliver, and assess instruction in Chemistry lectures and labs in terms of course competencies and institutional and program level student-learning outcomes.
  • Develop and/or update course content and materials and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to improve student attainment of learning outcomes, address diverse student needs, integrate thinking and writing skills, and use technology to support instruction.
  • Plan, organize, and independently carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  • Prepare course syllabi and maintain office hours for academic advising and student consultations.
  • Potentially teach evening and weekend classes, continuing-education classes, distance-education classes, and teach at off-campus sites.
  • Work collegially to provide service to the department and college.
  • Engage in public service related to one's professional status and/or expertise.
  • Engage in professional development.
  • Engage in professional or scholarly activities related to one's discipline or teaching.
  • Develop state-of-the-art lecture curriculum and learning technologies for on campus and/or online courses.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
