About The Position

Provide instruction in assigned subject areas, developing and revising course curriculum and educational materials. Evaluate student performance, maintain accurate records, and participate in assessment activities. Create a positive learning environment that encourages active learning and provides individualized support. Serve as an academic advisor, assisting students with academic plans, course selection, and degree completion. Stay current in the field and best practices in teaching through professional development. Participate in college and program activities and committees. New instructors will develop an individualized development plan. Perform other assigned college and program duties, including assisting with budgets, schedules, and reports, and ensuring a safe laboratory environment. Function as a member of the Arts & Sciences Division Team, promoting a positive image of the program and college. Support and promote an environment of belonging where all individuals feel welcomed, valued, and empowered.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree with at least 18 hours of graduate credit in Biological Science with an emphasis in anatomy, physiology, biology, or equivalent.
  • Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 academic courses/sections at secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Sciences discipline PLUS a minimum of 6 graduate credits in the subject area AND an approved plan to complete a Master’s degree within 2 years that includes 18 graduate credits in the subject area may substitute for the required Master’s degree.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to students in the face-to-face classroom, online, hybrid, and/or dual-credit setting according to the objectives of each course assigned by employing diverse teaching methods appropriate to individual student needs to accommodate various levels of academic preparation.
  • In cooperation with other department faculty, develop and/or revise written course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies as required to keep the courses current with pedagogy, best practice, and new editions of texts and other educational resources.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain written classroom/lab policies, grading structures, and strategies.
  • Develop a grading system for each class and maintain accurate records on student attendance, performance, and progress.
  • Participate in and/or provide data for department and general education assessment.
  • Create a positive classroom and lab atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and individualized support for learners.
  • Maintain posted office hours in accordance with departmental and College policies and encourage students to visit during these times.
  • Use technology to assist in ongoing communication with students.
  • Encourage a sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Serve as academic advisor to assigned students, assisting with academic plans, course selection, and registration.
  • Advise potential or current students within the discipline about program, career, or transfer options.
  • Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services.
  • Explain college policies and procedures to students and complete necessary records and forms.
  • Remain current in the field and with best practices in teaching and learning through self-study and participation in professional development.
  • Contribute to department initiatives and support others.
  • Attend, participate in, and support all department, division, and college activities and committees as requested.
  • Serve on assigned teams to contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation of the College and department.
  • Develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction (for new instructors).
  • Work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement.
  • Assist in maintaining security for all College equipment and materials.
  • Provide information and data to assist in the preparation of budgets, course schedules, short- and long-range plans, and other required reports.
  • Provide a safe laboratory work environment that includes the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Prepare laboratory materials and set up lab equipment appropriate to areas of instruction.
  • Maintain and store equipment when not in use.
  • Interact with colleagues, students, staff, and supervisors in a manner that projects a positive image of the program and the College.
  • Promote and facilitate instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and orientation as assigned.
  • Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute.
  • Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment.
