About The Position

The Adult Education Instructor/Success Coach, supervised by the Associate Director of Student Affairs, will facilitate learning opportunities for participants, including appropriate instruction (both online and in-person) and instructional guidance, including advisement, career coaching, basic computer skills, language, and mathematics skills at varying levels, reading comprehension for appropriate academic subjects in preparation for gainful employment or postsecondary. This position is funded by the US Department through the New Mexico Higher Education Department Adult Education Division.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field with 2 years of teaching adults in a classroom or tutoring environment (in-person and/or online).
  • Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of adult learners.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching strategies.
  • Knowledge of available community resources.
  • Knowledge of recruitment, training, and assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of testing principles.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and design principles.
  • Skill in the provision of advisement and coaching to adult education students.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in working effectively with multicultural populations.
  • Proficiency in using technology, computer skills, and educational software.
  • Ability to deliver an online and blended instruction in a virtual setting.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group setting.
  • Ability to determine the needs of students.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to be innovative in helping others while performing duties and tasks.
  • Must have a valid state driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's degree in Education or a related field with one year of experience teaching adults in a classroom and in a distance learning environment.
  • Experience working with at-risk students, especially those with learning differences.
  • Experience in workforce development and vocational training.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct adult education courses in all academic areas and job/career specific skills, technology and life-relevant skills.
  • Design and deliver effective adult education classes and programs.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Assess student progress and provide immediate constructive feedback.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching skills.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Collaborate with other instructors, staff, and community organizations to support student success.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress.
  • Uses analytical understanding in the results of assessments (Career, affective) and High School Equivalency testing as it relates to performance measures and participation level gains, including data analysis and inferred trends.
  • Participates in intake procedure, assessment information, advisement documentation, and establishes timeline for short and long-term goal achievement with participants.
  • Assists with student case management, knows students' names, where they reside, and academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assists students in accomplishing individual goals as well as the program goals in a timely manner.
  • Connects and networks with local employers to determine the types of skills needed by potential employees.
  • Trains students in the appropriate use of instruction guides, creating e-portfolios, online instruction, and career resources.
  • Monitors progress of students nearing completion with check-ins, scheduled meetings (either in-person or virtual), or proactive outreach and communication, responding to student questions, concerns, and needs.
  • Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic success.
  • Works with students to learn strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Motivates students to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success.
  • Develops a clear plan of career options, postsecondary, and/or training prior to students exiting/leaving the program.
  • Guide students in resume building, interview techniques, and job placement.
  • Evaluate students' educational needs, goals, and career aspirations.
  • Provides resources or referrals for students in need of further emotional and psychological support.
