About The Position

This position provides instructional support for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students, with a specific focus on Creole speakers. The role involves assisting students in developing English comprehension and transitioning into an English-speaking environment, reinforcing skills, and supporting parental involvement. The position is based in a public school district and requires adherence to various privacy and record-keeping laws.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a ParaPro Assessment Test or completion of 48 or more semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Bilingual/biliterate in a minimum of one target language such as Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, or other language as needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate written and verbal linguistic skills in English and in a minimum of one target language (Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, or other language as needed).
  • Ability to interpret and translate classroom assignments, parent communications, and other school-related activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Public Records, Sunshine Law, FERPA, and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy, public information, and records retention.
  • Knowledge of and experience with industry-standard equipment, materials, practices, computers and applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • One year experience working with children as a paraprofessional in a public school district.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration of individual and group tests in students' native languages or English, including WIDA Screener, native language assessments, and WIDA ACCESS.
  • Assist students for whom English is a second language to support comprehension and transition into an English-speaking environment.
  • Assist in the instructional process by working with students individually or in small groups in the target language to reinforce skills, supplement instruction, and implement teacher-developed lesson plans.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization, and use of instructional aids, materials, and technology.
  • Perform associated clerical and recordkeeping tasks related to ELL student progress.
  • Assist in monitoring the progress of students who have exited the ESOL program.
  • Work with the teacher to reinforce positive learning and behavior patterns among ELL students.
  • Assist students in developing study skills necessary for learning and achieving instructional objectives.
  • Support bilingual parental involvement by acting as an interpreter/translator at school events and meetings.
  • Demonstrate understanding and respect of individual student's culture and interests.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate record keeping of ELL student progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with laws and policies concerning student information.
  • Monitor student behavior/activity in the cafeteria and other campus locations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
