About The Position

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, provide instruction and lessons to classes of students in an assigned specialized subject-matter area, specifically cooking. This role involves developing and preparing lesson plans, curriculum, and content according to state and District standards. The specialist will plan, develop, and deliver classroom lessons and presentations, creating a variety of instructional materials and exercises. Responsibilities include monitoring and assisting students through drill, practice, and other instructional methods, and working with individual and small groups to reinforce lessons and improve skill levels. The specialist will also assist instructors in evaluating student progress, establishing class rules, and monitoring student behavior. Additionally, the role involves setting up and arranging materials, supplies, and equipment, providing technical assistance for specialized equipment, and ordering and maintaining supplies. Communication with parents regarding student progress and attendance, conferring with school staff, and maintaining reports and records are also key duties. The specialist will coordinate and plan student performances and exhibitions, maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, and perform general clerical duties. Specifically for cooking, the role delivers nutrition education through day-time and after-school classes, promoting healthy eating habits and the consumption of fresh produce and whole grains. This includes planning recipes and menus, mentoring students in culinary skills, and conducting food promotions and taste testing.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in the assigned instructional area (cooking/nutrition).
  • At least one year of experience working with school-age children in an organized educational environment.
  • Knowledge of assigned specialized subject matter areas, including applicable state and District standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and techniques of improving student knowledge through specialized structured lesson plans, teaching techniques, and instructional materials.
  • Knowledge of methods and practices of child instruction and tutoring.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of administrative practices and procedures, including record-keeping and filing practices and procedures.
  • Ability to perform specialized tasks applicable to specialized subject areas.
  • Ability to operate a computer, other standard office equipment, and specialized equipment and materials.
  • Ability to organize, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to monitor and control student behavior.
  • Ability to organize and maintain confidential student records and files.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports, and files.
