About The Position

Work closely with the Head of Instruction & Archival Engagement within the Outreach and Academic Engagement Department to support students and faculty by teaching in-person and remote class sessions, strategizing support for Reading Room use by graduate and undergraduate classes, coordinating the Schuchard Undergraduate Archival Research Prize program, and building educational resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience in education, library science, history, or a related field
  • Experience designing and implementing lessons centered around primary sources
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences, in both oral and written formats
  • Experience collaborating with student staff, educators, and institutional partners to plan and implement educational initiatives
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Self-motivated, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, public service environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools and Google Suite
  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in education, library science, or a field related to the Harry Ransom Center’s collection strengths
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Harry Ransom Center collections
  • At least one year of experience teaching in a cultural heritage institution
  • Hands-on experience working with archival collections or special collections
  • Experience using Aeon or another library/collection circulation software

Responsibilities

  • Relate Ransom Center collections to faculty's curricular needs, and deliver student-centered instructional sessions that interpret the Center's collections in ways that demonstrate a commitment to all-encompassing pedagogy, draw from diverse collection materials and scholarship, and prioritize active learning strategies.
  • Liaise with professors to design single, multi-visit, and semester-long classes that may include course reserve lists, scaffolded lesson planning, and extended research in relevant collections.
  • Facilitate class assignments in the Reading Room by scheduling student visits, preparing supplementary course materials, and organizing required Reading Room orientations and handling demonstrations.
  • Facilitate in-person and remote class sessions by curating archival materials in the learning space.
  • Provide a welcoming instructional environment that centers on belonging and community, while also safeguarding collection materials.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Instruction, manage the Schuchard Undergraduate Archival Research Prize program, including coordination with the Ransom Center’s Marketing & Communications, Events, and Business Office teams to: Administer the application process, Facilitate the evaluation panel, Coordinate with the Ransom Center’s Event Coordinator to plan and execute the Schuchard Award ceremony, Coordinate with the Ransom Center’s Marketing and Communication department to produce marketing materials for outlets such as the Ransom Center’s blog, magazine, and annual report.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Instruction to strategically plan programmatic growth by designing new workflows, assessing award submission metrics, and performing outreach to the campus community.
  • Assess outreach efforts to build new teaching relationships.
  • Administer student experience survey and distill findings into actionable insights for the Instructional Services Program.
  • Contribute to the development of training materials for new Instruction Team members.
  • Continue to grow skills as an instructor by participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, and mentoring of departmental graduate student teaching fellows, undergraduate interns, and Ransom Center staff.
  • Working with the Public Services team to facilitate equipment and technology moves, upgrades, and support services for the Instructional Services Program.
  • Participating in special projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Library Services Department and the Outreach and Academic Engagement Department to develop practices and policies that improve the accessibility of teaching and researching with Ransom Center collection materials.
  • Support Public Services by staffing service points, including Reception, Reference, and Circulation, and working occasional Saturday hours.
