About The Position

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Instructional Laboratory Technician (Welding) in the Instruction division. This position involves performing a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation, and maintenance of Welding laboratories, classrooms, tool rooms, and related areas. The role includes operating welding and metalworking equipment, processing instructional materials, and providing technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students. The position reports to the Dean, School of Applied Technologies, with daily task coordination by the department chair.

Requirements

Two (2) years of full-time equivalent, paid journey-level experience as a welder, metal fabricator, machinist, or closely related trade.
Education equivalent to an Associate's degree (60 semester units) from an accredited institution. Two (2) years of additional directly related experience may be substituted for each one year (30 semester units) of college. Additional years of relevant technical experience may be considered in lieu of the supplemental education required. Additional relevant education may be considered in lieu of the experience required.
Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License.
Possession of (or ability to obtain within probationary period) forklift operator certification.
Knowledge of basic principles, procedures, processes, and techniques used in operating common welding/cutting equipment.
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in metal fabrication and thermal cutting.
Knowledge of equipment and materials commonly used in welding training facilities.
Knowledge of fundamentals of welding history and theory.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures for welding tools and equipment.
Knowledge of industry health and safety practices and precautions applicable to CTE laboratories.
Knowledge of common procedures and techniques used in the processing of metal sheet, plate, bar, and pipe.
Basic understanding and skills of welding processes such as SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW.
Knowledge of safe handling and storage of hazardous materials and compressed gases.
Knowledge of applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and environmental compliance requirements.
Knowledge of inventory control and purchasing procedures.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications – Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Proficiency in use of Web browser and website management tools.
Ability to follow complex instructions to prepare and set up instructional welding laboratories.
Ability to safely move instructional supplies, consumables, equipment, and furniture using district forklift.
Ability to perform regular periodic maintenance of common welding, metal working and manufacturing equipment as per manufacturers’ recommendation.
Ability to perform tasks completely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
Ability to demonstrate current knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite, and other advanced technologies used to provide high-quality services.
Ability to use initiative and problem-solving skills in addressing basic to complex challenges.
Ability to develop or modify laboratory procedures in cooperation with faculty and staff.
Ability to keep detailed, accurate records and handle correspondences effectively.
Ability to organize and prioritize work in anticipation of needs and deadlines with efficiency, speed, and accuracy.
Ability to work and communicate effectively and cooperatively in oral and written form with students, staff, and faculty.
Ability to work varied hours including evenings and weekends.
Ability to support CTE programs at the Advanced Technical Center, Valencia campus, Castaic High School, and Pitchess Detention Center as necessary.
Ability to demonstrate teamwork and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy and professionalism.
Ability to understand and work within set curriculum, goals, and objectives of the welding department.
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the social, economic, and diversity of community college students, faculty, and administrators.
Ability to safely tow cargo trailers.

Nice To Haves

Associate's degree in Welding Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
Completion of a recognized welding apprenticeship or trade program.
Experience working in a community college instructional laboratory.
Microsoft Excel experience (Entry to intermediate).
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.

Responsibilities

Supports the safe operation and maintenance of the instructional welding laboratory and related areas.
Performs specialized technical duties to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
Assists department faculty in the organization, preparation, presentation, and use of instructional supplies and materials for Welding Technologies.
Assists in setting up demonstrations requiring special equipment and/or tools.
Performs operational and maintenance tasks in welding laboratories.
Assists individual and groups of students in an instructional setting.
Responds to questions concerning assigned subject matter and other related concerns and issues.
Orients, monitors, and assists students in the proper use of supplies, materials, tools, and related equipment.
Assists the department chair with the procurement, receipt, and processing of supplies, materials, and equipment.
Maintains inventory records for instructional and non-instructional shop supplies using Microsoft Office applications.
Conducts catalog research and contacts vendors to purchase supplies and materials.
Transfers necessary supplies between worksite, Valencia and additional Welding Program locations as needed.
Maintains assigned classrooms, labs, workshops, and tool room environments in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Assures the safe, efficient, and proper handling of tools including but not limited to hand and power tools, instructional equipment, and chemicals (solids, oils, solvents, and gases).
Updates, implements, and monitors all laboratory, workshop, and tool/equipment safety procedures including personal protective gear (PPE).
Ensures the proper disposal of scrap and waste materials in accordance with district guidelines.
Understands and implements safety protocols and procedures.
Performs a variety of clerical duties such as word processing and data entry, inventory management, correspondence and report development, answering telephones, picking-up and distributing mail, processing and tracking purchase requisitions, answering and redirecting inquiries, and maintaining files and records.
Assists in maintaining efficient laboratory operations through effective use of instructional supplies, materials, equipment, and allocated resources.
Supports the department chair by maintaining instructional supply inventories within given operational budget limits.
Assists with monitoring, training, scheduling and providing work direction to short-term employees and/or college assistants, as directed by the department chair and/or division dean.
Maintains inventory of welding performance testing materials.
Assists with welder qualification testing; prepares weld test specimens for inspection.
Prepares and maintains departmental inventories by conducting scheduled audits of both instructional and non-instructional supplies.
Assists students in the proper use of all welding and thermal cutting equipment, welding materials, and related safety equipment.
Assists faculty with welding demonstrations and demonstrates the proper operation of welding and thermal cutting equipment under faculty direction.
Assists faculty in the organization of daily lab teaching demonstrations.
Assists with periodic maintenance of welding department tools, equipment, and the Welding Technology Roadshow trailer.
Operates forklifts and other material-handling equipment as required.
