About The Position

The Instructional Laboratory Technician II, Physics position is located at the campus in Temecula, CA. This role, under the general supervision of the Instructional Dean of Math and Science and the direct supervision of the Director of Instructional Laboratory Operations, is responsible for preparing laboratories for class session activities in a face-to-face environment for the physical sciences. The incumbent will respond to student questions and maintain a supportive and professional relationship with students, lead instructional laboratory technicians, and faculty. The Instructional Laboratory Technician II performs discipline-specific technical tasks, including preparing and standardizing solutions and other laboratory materials, calibrating and making minor repairs to equipment, issuing and replacing specialized materials, organizing and maintaining stockrooms, setting up and dismantling apparatus, checking out experimental equipment for faculty, and managing requisitions, receipts, storage, and inventories of chemicals, supplies, and equipment. The role also includes collecting and storing chemical waste and maintaining records of open accounts and budget information.

Requirements

  • An Associate of Science degree in Physical Sciences or related field (attach transcripts).
  • A minimum of sixteen (16) semester units of college-level coursework in Physical Sciences including lab coursework.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in an educational or research laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the district.
  • Must maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.
  • Prior to access to District vehicles, must complete successful enrollment in the District's Direct Pull program with the DMV.
  • Be comfortable working in a normal laboratory and office setting.
  • Be able to lift 30lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Physical Sciences or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in a science laboratory.
  • Knowledge of proper protocols when working with hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the safety of the preparation area, laboratories, stockrooms, and classrooms by developing good chemical hygiene habits and being alert for chemical spills and potential hazards.
  • Follow strict safety procedures common to the laboratory.
  • Answer students’ general questions.
  • Calculate the costs of materials from sources such as quotes, price lists, and estimates.
  • Procure, requisition, and receive laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Assemble, test, install and store new equipment, instruments, and other laboratory supplies.
  • Assist faculty in the planning and implementation of experimental design and preparation of laboratory exercises.
  • Set up various experiments and classroom demonstrations, as scheduled by faculty.
  • Assist faculty with the presentation of safety hazards and laboratory procedures to students during the laboratory session.
  • Measure, mix, and prepare reagents, chemical solutions and other material following formulas and procedures using standard laboratory equipment, policy, and procedures.
  • Prepare and use specialized equipment following laboratory procedures.
  • Neutralize and properly dispose of chemical waste materials according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards.
  • Neutralize acid-base chemical returns, precipitate out heavy metals and handle other chemical returns according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards.
  • Set up and dismantle experiments as required and assemble, disassemble, clean, replace, and store apparatus and equipment used in laboratory experiments and demonstrations.
  • Return materials, tools, and equipment to designated area and clean up all laboratory equipment after each lab/field session.
  • Maintain specialized files including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and computerized inventory and storage location of chemicals.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on lab equipment.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of needed repairs, maintenance or any hazardous conditions that exist in the laboratories via submission of work orders.
  • Keep current on matters concerning safety, hazardous materials management and chemical waste disposal and implement procedures to comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations for academic institutions.
  • Assist faculty with monitoring exams, quizzes, and lab practicals.
  • Assist Faculty with audio/visual Presentations.
  • May attend District approved field trips and assist instructor as needed.
  • May assist with transporting students to District approved field trips using District vehicle.
  • Maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate to the classification as assigned by the department supervisor.
