About The Position

The Laboratory Technician will perform laboratory procedures for mineral processing research projects in the Institute’s Metallurgical Laboratory and assist with chemical analysis work in the Analytical Laboratory. The employee performs routine lab and equipment maintenance. The successful candidate will be expected to exhibit individual initiative, work independently, effectively communicate, ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures, and demonstrate attention to detail. This position reports to the Director, Operations (FIPR).

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of related laboratory experience.
  • Experience with sample splitting, crushing, grinding, sizing, drying, and wet and dry screening.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of general safety protocol.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of the use and preparation of chemicals and reagents.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, and walking.
  • Ability to carry out written directions.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships, demonstrating sensitivity and respect for a diverse population.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires a criminal background check.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for metallurgical experiments involving sample splitting, crushing, grinding, sizing, and drying, wet and dry screening, and bulk density testing.
  • Prepare samples for chemical analysis.
  • Operate minerals separation equipment (e.g., flotation machine, gravity separation device, hydrocyclones, centrifuge, and others).
  • Acid digestion of mineral samples for chemical analysis.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data using specialized software for analytical equipment and standard spreadsheets such as Excel.
  • Maintain an accurate record of tests and test results.
  • Apply quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy of test results.
  • Perform routine lab cleaning to maintain safety compliance and quality control.
  • Clean glassware used for chemical analysis.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • May prepare solutions or reagents used for tests.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
