About The Position

The Instructional Lab Technician provides technical and operational support for the Fiber Optics training program funded through the Texas Broadband Workforce grant project. This position is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and operation of instructional labs and specialized equipment, ensuring that all tools, materials, and learning environments are safe, functional, and aligned with industry standards. The Technician supports instructors and students during hands-on training activities and assists with inventory control, equipment maintenance, and documentation in accordance with institutional policies and grant requirements. This is a grant-funded position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Three years of professional full-time experience working in a technical, industrial, telecommunications, electronics or related field, with strong knowledge of basic workplace and lab safety practices.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Fiber Optics, Telecommunications, Electronics, Networking or related field.
  • Experience supporting instructional labs or industrial training programs with knowledge in inventory control and maintenance of technical equipment.
  • Industry-recognized fiber optic certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the setup, operation, and breakdown of fiber optics instructional labs, ensuring equipment and materials are prepared according to curriculum and safety requirements.
  • Maintains, inspects, inventories, and troubleshoots fiber optics tools, testing equipment, simulators, and instructional materials to ensure continuous operational readiness.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to instructors and students during lab sessions, demonstrations, and skills-based activities.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and calibration of lab equipment; coordinates service, repairs, or replacements with vendors and contractors as needed.
  • Monitors lab activities to ensure compliance with safety protocols, proper equipment usage, and adherence to institutional, grant, and industry safety standards.
  • Maintains accurate records related to equipment inventory, maintenance logs, usage reports, and warranties to support grant reporting, audits, and internal reviews.
  • Assists with informational sessions and outreach efforts in collaboration with staff.
  • Supports instructional staff with preparation of materials, supplies, and technical resources needed for effective delivery of hands-on training.
  • Assists with the coordination of equipment delivery, installation, storage, and secure handling of grant-funded assets.
  • Collaborates with program leadership to identify equipment needs, recommend improvements, and support continuous enhancement of the Fiber Optics program.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and instructional environment.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Dean of Community Education, Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs, Associate Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs, and/or President.
