About The Position

This is a Contract Instructional Designer role for 2026, focused on designing and developing training for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry. The role works under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates, and requires the ability to meet in person for milestone meetings. The position is hybrid, and candidates must be local to support client needs and regular meetings.

Requirements

  • Experienced in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams
  • Self-manage assigned tasks and deadlines to complete deliverables on time
  • Work closely with team and subject matter experts to proactively communicate concerns, issues, and risks
  • Experience designing and developing instructor-led, virtual, and web-based training (WBT)
  • Strong instructional design foundation (e.g., ADDIE or similar methodology)
  • Ability to translate complex technical content into clear, learner-friendly materials
  • Experience working with SMEs to gather and validate content
  • Familiarity with tools such as Articulate, Captivate, or similar eLearning authoring tools
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (SMEs, program owners, leadership)
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Adaptability and ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ownership of deliverables
  • Proactive mindset and ability to drive work forward with minimal oversight
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Bachelor's degree in areas such as adult education and/or related areas of study (required)
  • Experience in instructional design methodologies and technical writing (required)
  • 3 years of experience developing instructor-led training for complex, hands-on skills; such as electrical utilities or related industries (required)

  • Understanding of compliance-driven or technical training environments is a plus
  • Experience with hydroelectric operations, apprenticeships, mechanical engineering, or machining
  • Experience with QuestionMark, Author-It
  • Skilled in graphic design

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop instructor-led (classroom) and on-the-job (field-based) training for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry.
  • Perform detailed task analysis for hydro utility workers performing complex, high-risk, hands-on work.
  • Create hands-on practice activities, student guides, facilitator guides, and scenario-based learning materials.
  • Develop assessments, simulations, videos, and other instructional media to support applied skills development and job performance.
  • Define learning objectives and course structure aligned to stakeholder needs and to meet the constraints of safety requirements and remote learning environments.
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates.
  • Participate in milestone meetings with subject matter experts, including task analysis, alpha, beta, train the trainer, and pilot.
  • Engage with subject matter experts for ongoing content review and validation.
