About The Position

This position is NOT benefits-eligible and is located at Bernardo Heights Middle School, with a 9.5-month work year, 3 hours per day/15 hours per week, supporting VAPA/Performing Arts/Drama. This posting will remain active until the position has been filled. The job of Instructional Assistant - Vocational Education is done for the purposes of providing instructional support to individual or small groups of students enrolled in a designated vocational education program (drama) in a classroom or other learning environment; preparing classroom equipment and instructional materials; maintaining supplies and inventory; and providing record-keeping and clerical support to the teacher(s) and staff. This position will support Drama and Visual Arts in meeting the technical needs of the creative arts across the five VAPA disciplines (dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts).

Requirements

  • Passage of the PUSD examination for this classification
  • Two years of experience working with students in the Drama specialty and functions related to the assigned vocational education program
  • Some specialized knowledge areas require additional education.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent
  • Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education
  • Possession of an associate's (or higher) degree
  • Passing the District's local assessment that demonstrates the knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting state and federal requirements.
  • Two years of experience working with functions related to the assigned vocational education program (Performing Arts).
  • Operating standard office equipment, including using pertinent computer and software applications
  • Operating industry-standard equipment relevant to Career Technical Education courses
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records

  • Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential OR who possess a Bachelor's Degree AND have passed the CBEST will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students enrolled in a designated vocational education program (drama and visual arts) in a classroom or other learning environment; tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher.
  • Monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in a designated vocational education area; assist the assigned teacher with implementing lesson plans; assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; grade student tests and assignments as directed; process program forms and applications as required; record student attendance as assigned.
  • Provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, distributing and collecting paper, supplies, and materials, and conferring with teachers regarding lesson plans and materials to meet student needs; report progress on student performance.
  • Assist students by answering questions, providing appropriate examples, maintaining a friendly attitude, and offering general guidance.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to student grades, attendance, classroom functions, and assigned activities; input student attendance and other data, and maintain automated records as required.
  • Communicate with students, District personnel, and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; answer telephones and provide program and classroom information as assigned.
  • Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment, including a copier, fax machine, overhead projector, computer, and assigned software.
  • Monitor classroom supply inventory as directed; assist with ordering, receiving, and maintaining classroom supply inventory.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain the learning environment in a safe, orderly, and clean manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
