About The Position

York School District One Instructional Services seeks a Special Education Instructional Assistant to support teachers in achieving their objectives. This role involves working with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning and help students master skills and instructional materials. The assistant will also help with student supervision, personal care needs, and maintaining a positive learning environment, adhering to the same ethical standards as licensed teachers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma with a successful passing grade on the Para Pro exam or two-year degree, or 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Prior work with children
  • Possess and utilize excellent team-building skills
  • Able to lift 75 lbs. or more
  • Accept delegated responsibilities willingly
  • Able to work under occasional stress
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative in job performance

Responsibilities

  • Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
  • Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills.
  • Operates and cares for classroom equipment.
  • Helps students master equipment or instructional materials.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and other times.
  • Assists students with bathroom needs and mobility.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication.
  • Assists students in the library or media center.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work.
  • Helps students with their clothing.
  • Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
  • Assists with wash-up and toilet routines.
  • Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Serves as a source of information and helps any substitute teacher.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Participates in in-service training programs.
