About The Position

The job of Instructional Assistant - Special Ed was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom and under the supervision of a teacher or administrator, with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom. Instructional assistant will also provide direct support to a student who is bind, ensuring full access to classroom instruction, activities, and the learning environment. This role focuses on adapting materials, facilitating participation, and promoting safe, independent mobility within the classroom and school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
  • Adapt classroom materials and activities into accessible formats, including braille, tactile graphics, and hands-on learning tools.
  • Provide real-time support during group instruction (e.g., circle time) by describing visual materials and ensuring the student can actively participate.
  • Modify assignments and classroom tasks that rely on visual skills (such as identifying colors, numbers, letters, pictures, and name recognition) into accessible alternatives.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher to ensure all curriculum components are inclusive and accessible.
  • Help prepare materials in braille as needed.
  • Assist the student with navigation and mobility throughout the classroom, school, and playground environments.
  • Support the development of independent travel skills, including the use of a long cane, while ensuring safety at all times.
  • Encourage independence while providing appropriate guidance and supervision based on the student’s developmental level.
  • Monitor student during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus-loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily-living skills, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring students success in school.
