About The Position

The Special Education Bridges Program - Special Ed Instructional Assistant - 1.0FTE position is responsible for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students. This role involves helping to implement instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and providing information to school personnel. The duties may vary depending on the specific school or program needs, such as generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, or autism support.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one of the following: a qualifying score on the ETS paraeducator assessment, an associate degree or higher, seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university, or completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations with fractions, percents, and ratios.
  • Ability to read manuals, write documents, and present information.
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate student activities.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of stages of child development/behavior.
  • Ability to adhere to safety practices.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including pertinent software applications.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to gather and/or collate data.
  • Ability to use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with others in various circumstances.
  • Ability to work with data utilizing defined and similar processes.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials to ensure all special education students can participate.
  • Administers a variety of materials and assignments, such as tests and homework, to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing student needs.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for professional development and information sharing.
  • Confers with teachers (special education and mainstream) to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Confers with teachers and parents regarding student progress and individual educational programs.
  • Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions.
  • Instructs students in academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills in individual and group settings.
  • Maintains instructional materials and student files/records, including adapting materials and tracking attendance.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments to ensure safety and provide a positive learning environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
