About The Position

The Instructional Assistant - Severely Disabled position at Morongo Unified School District, within Instructional Services, is designed to support teachers in the supervision and instruction of students with severe special needs. This role involves observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional plans, and assisting students with their special healthcare needs. The primary goal is to create a positive and safe learning environment that supports the academic, behavioral, and daily living skill development of severely disabled students.

  • Pre-employment Proficiency Test (AA or 48 college level semester units may be required).
  • Valid Driver’s License & Evidence of Insurability (by assignment).
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • TB Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing an opportunity for all special education students to participate in classroom activities.
  • Assists special education students one on one with classroom and daily living skills (e.g., toileting, diapering, tubefeeding, changing PE clothes, etc.) as assigned, to create a positive plan of action to address specific student issues and help them process behaviors.
  • Assists the teacher in instructing special education students (e.g., math, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) to implement goals and ensure student success.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., CPR training, Blood Borne Pathogen) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Implements academic instruction for individuals or small groups (e.g., cooking, math, reading, spelling, music, etc.) to meet learning goals as described by an IEP and/or district benchmarks.
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting special education students' needs and provide a consistent environment.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, audio visual equipment, set up projects, behavior point sheets, etc.) to ensure availability of items and provide reliable information.
  • Monitors special education student(s) (e.g., lunch, bus stops, playground, classroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior) and clerical functions (e.g., correcting papers, copying, instructional materials, etc.) to support the teacher in providing necessary records/materials.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, fights, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
