About The Position

This recruitment is open and promotional, meaning all are welcome to apply and current employees in permanent positions are eligible to receive seniority credit and promotional placement once passing all exams. There are currently three vacancies: College Park Elementary School working 5.0 hours per day, 5 days per week (Monday-Friday), 10 months per year. Rea Elementary School working 5.0 hours per day, 5 days per week (Monday-Friday), 10 months per year. Whittier Elementary School working 5.0 hours per day, 5 days per week (Monday-Friday), 10 months per year. Please note that this is a bilingual position and the successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English. The ability to speak Spanish is required and will be evaluated during the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (Oral Exam) phase of the recruitment. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and some experience working with children in an organized setting.
  • Proficient in English and a designated second language (Spanish required).
  • Ability to speak Spanish is required and will be evaluated during the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (Oral Exam) phase of the recruitment.
  • Knowledge of correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
  • Knowledge of child guidance principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining a classroom or other learning environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Knowledge of basic instructional methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Knowledge of basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling.
  • Knowledge of basic concepts of child development and child behavior characteristics.
  • Knowledge of safe practices in classroom activities.
  • Knowledge of operation of a variety of office and classroom equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Ability to assist a certificated teacher with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Ability to reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.
  • Ability to monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by translating written materials and oral lectures; translate for teachers or non-English speaking parents as assigned.
  • Monitor students in the classroom or other learning environment to assure understanding of material being presented; answer student questions; assist students in reviewing homework assignments and test results; report student progress and behavior to teachers as needed.
  • Monitor and assist students in drill practice and study activities as a follow up to the presentation of instructional concepts; assist student with the use of classroom or learning center equipment and the addressing of specific learning issues.
  • Provide classroom support to teachers by setting up work areas, displays and bulletin boards; prepare and distribute various instructional materials; grade student assignments; maintain assigned learning center in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Participate in and provide oral and written translation in parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls and other District communications with limited or non-English speaking students, parents and family members as assigned; translate notes, letters and other materials as necessary.
  • Perform routine clerical duties using a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, laminator and fax machine.
  • Administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students; explain and interpret results to appropriate parties.
  • Monitor students using the playground area during recesses and outdoor activities; assist teachers during field trips and a variety of instructional excursions.
  • Maintain a variety of records and files including confidential student records, files and information.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; administer basic first aid as needed.
  • Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and work pronunciation and recognition.
  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and school events as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
