About The Position

Amigos School is dedicated to a strong tradition of excellence in English and Spanish bilingual education. Located in the Cambridgeport neighborhood, Amigos is a comprehensive PK – 8 school. Amigos welcomes students from diverse neighborhoods and cultural backgrounds. Through school-community collaborations, Amigos strives to provide quality out-of-school-time programs that foster linguistic and cultural connections. Two-way immersion develops high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism, and cultural competencies among students and contributes to the long-term preparation of students for the global economy. Bringing culturally diverse students together in situations in which each has equal status spurs motivation and promotes cohesion, community building, and cooperation. The instructional aide will work as an assistant teacher under the direction of the classroom teacher and the principal. The aide will assist the teacher in providing students with instruction in Spanish and English, and in planning and developing a positive learning environment focused on high academic achievement in two languages. In addition, the aide will work with pupils individually and in small group activities, make and prepare instructional materials, and assist with recess and lunch supervision. The successful candidate will work cooperatively with grade-level, cluster, and whole-school teams of teachers, including specialists in the areas of ESL, SSL, and Special Education. The successful candidate must help implement an academically and linguistically active curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and socially/culturally responsive to the needs of the dual language student population.

Requirements

  • Associates degree, or 48 college credits from an accredited college or university
  • High levels of native language proficiency in Spanish and English, including listening, speaking, reading, grammar, and writing.
  • Willingness to be trained in de-escalation and safe physical restraint techniques.
  • Must have the physical ability to work on the floor and move around the room to support students and teachers in curriculum implementation, use of manipulatives, and other instructional methods and materials.
  • Previous and successful experience working in a multicultural environment and demonstrated implementation of culturally responsive practices that include students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
