About The Position

This position is responsible for gaining a working knowledge of and performing fire protection inspections and 24-hour service under the direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician. The role involves assisting with the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes. The Inspector will develop knowledge of life safety and NFPA codes and standards, as well as fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, and their components. They will perform testing and maintenance under supervision, complete training documentation, and differentiate between inspection deficiencies and necessary service. The Inspector must understand and follow the company's safety program, including Hazardous Communication and SDS protocols, and participate in weekly Toolbox talks. They are required to know the location of all safety documentation on each project and attend training sessions to stay updated on technology and practices. A key requirement is to begin the NICET exam cycle application and preparation within specific training evolutions, aiming to test for NICET Level II certification in Inspection Testing & Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems within approximately one year of hire or training enrollment, prior to achieving "Inspector" status. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be able to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer specific requirements based on contractual agreement.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, ascend and descend step stools, ladders and stairs, kneel, lift <50lbs, reach above and below shoulders, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Employee is required to see in color, close and far distances, peripheral, depth, and adjust focus.
  • Employee will occasional be required to balance, crouch, drive, kneel, lift >50lbs, sit, stoop, twist, and work at heights.
  • Employee will frequently be required to work inside and outside in hot/cold temperatures and be exposed to loud noises, cramped quarters, dust, fumes and odors, standing on hard surfaces, and electrical hazards frequently.
  • Employees will occasionally be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery, uneven and slippery surfaces.
  • Employee must consistently wear all appropriate personal protective equipment, as required by company safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Inspectors while they inspect, test, and maintain fire protection systems in accordance with NFPA codes.
  • Perform testing and maintenance under direct supervision of an Inspection/Service Technician.
  • Complete on the job training documentation each week.
  • Differentiate between inspection deficiencies and service required to correct found deficiencies.
  • Understand and follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in weekly Toolbox talks.
  • Inspectors must know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project.
  • Attend Inspector training session at SFS to stay abreast of changing technology, installation and testing and reporting approaches.
  • Begin NICET exam cycle application within the 3rd evolution of training.
  • Begin NICET exam preparation within the 4th evolution of training.
  • Begin to test for NICET during session 5 or approximately within 1 year of hire date or enrollment into Inspector training classes.
  • Pass NICET Level II certification in Inspection Testing & Maintaining of Water Based Fire Protection Systems prior to achieving “Inspector” status.
