About The Position

Under general supervision, oversees construction projects and assures contractors meet or exceed plans and specifications outlined by Yavapai County contracts. Responsible for the safety of the project site, including traveling public and contracted personnel and documents all aspects of construction projects for compliance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in road construction, to include three (3) years as an inspector.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of: Road construction techniques and material construction plans specifications.
  • Knowledge of: Right-of-way construction standards for Yavapai County.
  • Knowledge of: Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of: Relevant ordinances, local and state codes, resolutions, specifications, and standards.
  • Knowledge of: Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Knowledge of: Clerical office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of: Research techniques and report writing.
  • Knowledge of: Current Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of: Filing and recordkeeping.
  • Skill in: Performing safety and compliance inspections.
  • Skill in: Department specific computer-based programs.
  • Skill in: Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and performs compliance inspection of new and existing road construction, pavement preservation including chip sealing, fog sealing and crack sealing, asphalt overlays, guardrails, bridge re-construction, low water crossings, drainage improvements, box culverts and headwalls.
  • Coordinates quality control testing on in house capital improvement projects and contracted projects of all sizes.
  • Oversees the analyzing of complex plans and blueprints and for detecting substandard materials and workmanship.
  • Performs project safety inspections and tracks quantities for payment.
  • Assists with public relations as a first line of communication with County constituents affected by projects.
  • Serving as the first line of communication between contractors and Yavapai County management staff.
  • Assists public works engineering staff with field inspection for the planning and designing of future construction projects.
  • Inspects Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for compliance and maintenance.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of new Regional Roads Inspectors.
  • Prepares detailed daily field reports on project activities.
  • Maintains and updates documentation and reports utilizing computer programs including Word, Adobe Pro, and Excel.
  • Maintains as-built plan sets during construction activities for documentation.
  • Controls and directs work on smaller inhouse projects using rented equipment and manpower with a pre-determined budget.
  • Orders essential materials and equipment.
  • Performs onsite inspections and supervision.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
