About The Position

The Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation is responsible for policies, legislation, regulations and services necessary for Alberta’s agriculture and food sectors to grow, prosper and diversify; inspiring public confidence in the quality and safety of food; supporting environmentally sustainable resource management practices; leading collaboration that enables safe and resilient rural communities. The work of the Inspection and Investigation Section (IIS) focuses on providing a regulatory environment that contributes to and enhances the growth of a globally competitive and sustainable agriculture and food industry. The IIS contributes to the security and safety of the animal and food systems by providing effective and efficient inspection, licensing, investigation, audit assurance, and enforcement of 9 Acts and 10 Regulations assigned to the Section as well as related legislation assigned to other branches within Agriculture. The IIS is also mandated to ensure that Alberta remains rat free and oversees the Wild Boar Program. As an Inspection and Investigation Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring legislative compliance under 19 Acts and Regulations impacting Alberta’s agriculture sector. Reporting to the Inspection and Investigation Section Manager, you will conduct inspections and investigations, support regulated agricultural industries, and collaborate with stakeholders to promote compliance and food safety.

Requirements

  • University graduation in a related field such as Criminal Law, Investigation related field or related, plus 4 years of related experience in law enforcement, formal investigations, regulatory compliance, and inspection programs.
  • Functional expertise in both inspections and investigations.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a clear Driver’s Abstract.
  • You will be required to provide a clean Criminal Record Check.
  • The successful candidate will be required to immediately qualify for and hold a Peace Officer appointment issued by the Alberta Solicitor General’s Office.

Nice To Haves

  • P.Ag. designation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Compliance Principles of Alberta Agriculture, agricultural Acts, and Regulations.
  • Proficiency in inspection, investigation, and audit techniques, including surveillance or undercover operations.
  • Expertise and acumen in enforcement actions, such as issuing penalties and license suspension.
  • Experience in coordinating inspections, investigations, and recommending courses of action based on research.
  • Expertise in communicating legislative requirements, developing and delivering presentations, and producing clear reports.
  • Exceptional conflict resolution skills with the ability to independently analyze and react to diverse situations.
  • Familiarity with report writing, occurrence reporting programs, note book documentation and evolving law enforcement technology.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting audits, inspections, and investigations under legislation such as but not limited to the Feeder Associations Guarantee Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Animal Health Act, Dairy Industry Act and Animal Keepers Act.
  • Developing inspection strategies, coordinating investigations, and recommending compliance actions, based on Alberta Agriculture Compliance Principles.
  • Evaluating and licensing premises and individuals, ensuring compliance with regulated standards.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including the RCMP, CFIA, Alberta SPCA, and others, to advance Provincial compliance objectives.
  • Providing education, presentations, and recommendations for legislative amendments to industry and government partners.
  • This position requires working independently across a wide geographic area, often in remote locations, to ensure compliance while maintaining personal safety.
