About The Position

The Inova Schar Cancer Institute is looking for an experienced Advanced Practice Provider to join our team at Inova Alexandria Hospital, supporting inpatient consult services across hematology/oncology and radiation oncology. This role offers a collaborative clinical environment with a strong multidisciplinary team. Schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM. Quarterly weekend call (phone only, no rounding), and no holiday coverage required. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Inpatient Hematology/Oncology and Radiation Oncology Consult Service plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within the acute care setting. The APP works in close collaboration with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a multidisciplinary care team to provide comprehensive clinical assessments, management of complex oncologic conditions, and coordination of inpatient consultative services. This role is responsible for evaluating and managing patients with both solid tumors and hematologic malignancies, supporting diagnostic workups, initiating and adjusting treatment plans, and monitoring patient progress throughout hospitalization. The APP also provides patient and family education, assists with procedures, and ensures seamless transitions of care. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice, proactive clinical decision-making, and effective communication to optimize patient outcomes and enhance the overall quality of care. Requirements

  • Work schedule: Full-time: Monday – Friday with rotating weekend call
  • Education: Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice or graduate of a post masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, OR certificate from an education program that is accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing of the National League for Nursing. For physician Assistants, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program and certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Certification - Basic Life Support prior to start
  • Licensure: Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; If Nurse Practitioner: RN Compact License(depending on State of primary residence) AND a license (or eligibility for) as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia AND a "Practice Agreement" signed by sponsoring/ supervising physician(s), AND a written "Scope of Practice/Protocol" signed by the supervising physician, AND "Drug Enforcement Administration License" (if prescribing controlled substances)
  • Payer Credentialing: Ability to successfully complete the credentialing process by third-party payors and Ability to enrolled as a CMS Medicare/Medicaid payor
  • Medical Staff Credentialing: Successful completion of credentialing for Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges sufficient to perform all required services

Nice To Haves

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years experience in Hematology/Oncology or Radiation Oncology. Will consider candidates with hospitalist or other inpatient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive patient assessments for inpatient hematology/oncology and radiation oncology consults, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and evaluation of acute and chronic oncologic conditions.
  • Provides ongoing management of hospitalized patients in collaboration with supervising physicians, including development, implementation, and adjustment of care plans.
  • Evaluates and manages patients with urgent or complex clinical presentations, determining appropriate interventions and escalating care when necessary.
  • Orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic and laboratory studies to support clinical decision-making and treatment planning.
  • Writes and manages medical orders, including initiation, adjustment, and discontinuation of medications in accordance with state regulations and established protocols.
  • Monitors patient progress throughout hospitalization, reassessing clinical status, documenting changes, and communicating updates to the care team.
  • Ensures accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of all patient encounters, consults, procedures, and communications within the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams including oncology, radiation oncology, nursing, case management, and ancillary services to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, medications, and post-discharge care.
  • Assists physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, demonstrating technical proficiency and adherence to safety standards.
  • Participates in care coordination and discharge planning, including arranging follow-up care, referrals, and transitions of care.
  • Supports quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives to enhance patient safety, clinical outcomes, and cost-effective care delivery.
  • Serves as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff and peers, promoting professional development and best practices.
  • Maintains current knowledge of hematology/oncology and radiation oncology practices through ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Demonstrates strong teamwork and communication skills, fostering a collaborative and respectful clinical environment.
