Innovation Attorney & Practice Advisor

Morrison & Foerster, LLPWashington, DC

About The Position

The Innovation Attorney & Practice Advisor is a core member of the Practice Innovation & Technology team, serving as a trusted, practice-embedded consultant who works side-by-side with MoFo attorneys to reimagine how legal services are delivered. This role bridges the gap between the substantive practice of law and the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies. Reporting to the Director of Practice Innovation & Technology, this role requires an experienced attorney who brings genuine credibility and fluency in BigLaw workflows — someone who has lived the work and can now help reshape it. You will embed directly with practice groups and leverage your legal practice experience to diagnose workflow challenges, identify high-impact opportunities for AI-enabled solutions, and drive adoption from pilot to scale. It is a strategic advisory role for someone who wants to use their legal training and practice experience to fundamentally change how a leading global law firm operates.

Requirements

  • Attorney with Big Law Experience: You have a JD and 3–5 years of practice experience at an AmLaw 100 firm.
  • Consultative Mindset: You are a natural advisor and someone partners want to reach out to. You can diagnose a workflow problem, propose a solution, and build consensus without positional authority.
  • AI & Technology Fluency: You are deeply engaged with the GenAI landscape. You're testing tools, experimenting with prompts, and thinking critically about where AI creates real value versus hype.
  • Master Communicator: You can explain a RAG architecture to a senior partner in language they'll understand, and you can translate a partner's frustration about a broken process into a clear product requirement for an engineer.
  • Change Agent: You understand that technology adoption is fundamentally a human challenge. You bring empathy, patience, and persistence to the work of helping people change how they do their jobs.
  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a consultative partner to practice leaders and attorneys to diagnose substantive legal workflows and identify where AI and technology can deliver measurable value.
  • Apply legal practice experience to critically analyze existing workflows in collaboration with attorneys — moving beyond incremental improvements to architect truly reimagined delivery models that leverage AI tools
  • Lead working sessions with client teams and matter teams to surface pain points and co-develop solutions grounded in real-world legal practice.
  • Act as a trusted peer to partners and associates, leveraging your own practice experience to build credibility, navigate firm dynamics, and drive change in a high-stakes professional environment.
  • Lead the execution of AI pilots and proof-of-concept programs within practice groups, managing the full lifecycle from use case identification through evaluation and enterprise deployment.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager on the "last mile" of AI adoption within assigned practice groups — from initial awareness through trust-building to habitual, high-quality use of AI tools in daily legal work.
  • Collaborate with Technology Trainers to design and deliver tailored training, coaching sessions, and hands-on demonstrations that help attorneys understand how, when, why to use AI tools.
  • Collaborate with the Sr. Product Manager to configure, test, and refine AI tools for practice-specific use cases, translating attorney needs into product requirements and feedback loops.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to define success metrics, track adoption data, and build compelling business cases for scaling successful pilots.
  • Coordinate with the firm's Knowledge & Practice Intelligence function to ensure that firm precedents, playbooks, and institutional knowledge are structured and accessible to power AI tools effectively.
  • Maintain a current understanding of the GenAI landscape as it applies to legal practice — continuously evaluating new tools, capabilities, and application patterns (LLMs, RAG, agentic frameworks).
  • Contribute to "make vs. buy" assessments and vendor evaluations, bringing the practitioner's perspective to technology selection decisions.
  • Represent MoFo's innovation capabilities in client-facing contexts, supporting business development conversations about the firm's AI-enabled service delivery.

Benefits

  • MoFo offers a comprehensive benefits package starting on your first day.
  • A variety of options for medical, dental, vision, life and disability coverage to meet the needs of you and your family.
  • Industry-leading parental leave and family benefits including adoption and fertility treatment options and backup child and elder care.
  • Global wellness program, including free access to Talkspace and Calm apps.
  • Annual community service day to make an impact on your community and a birthday holiday just for fun.
  • Education reimbursement annually.
  • Dedicated Talent Development team.
  • Competitive annual profit-sharing contribution.
