About The Position

Toromont Cat is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Power Systems Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design and development of control panels, switchgear, and advanced control systems, including PLC and HMI programming, as well as the integration of renewable and hybrid energy solutions. This position plays a key role in delivering safe, compliant, and high-quality electrical systems for complex customer applications across Canada.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and be a member in good standing or eligible for membership with either the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • A minimum of 10 years of electrical engineering experience in power systems, control, or industrial fields.
  • Solid hands-on experience in control panel and switchgear design, PLC and HMI programming, and power system protection and control.
  • Travel required to customer sites for commissioning (Canada) and to Toromont's switchgear plant for FAT testing (Pointe-Claire).
  • Excellent knowledge of CSA standards, the Canadian Electrical Code, and industry practices.
  • Experience with generator control systems, synchronization and paralleling, and auxiliary systems.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on complex designs while collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with renewable energy, energy storage, or hybrid microgrids is considered a significant asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design of low and medium voltage control panels and switchgear for power generation and distribution systems.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, three-phase diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable termination lists.
  • Design and integrate PLC and HMI-based control systems, including system architecture, logic development, and commissioning support.
  • Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, synchronization controllers, multifunction protective relays, and communication gateways.
  • Design renewable and hybrid energy management solutions, including generators, energy storage systems (BESS), renewable sources, and power management systems.
  • Design retrofit solutions for existing customer sites, including generators, battery energy storage systems (BESS), multi-generator synchronization, and PLC, HMI, and energy management systems.
  • Interpret and apply CSA requirements and the Canadian Electrical Code to ensure regulatory compliance and readiness for certification.
  • Select and specify electrical components according to performance, reliability requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Lead or support advanced electrical protection coordination studies.
  • Collaborate closely with project management, manufacturing, commissioning, and service teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship on highly complex projects.
