Provides assessment and nursing intervention in all areas of Infusion Therapy when requested by physicians and/or clinical trial protocols in the outpatient setting. Perform the nursing process through individualized assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation of safe, therapeutic, efficient, and quality care for patients consistent with the unit’s standard of care. This includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, IV therapy, and blood transfusions. Treatment methods include intravenous, subcutaneous, and injections. The infusion RN must demonstrate competency in accessing porta-caths and PICC lines as well as peripheral venous access and case management intervention. The RN is responsible for case management and care coordination across all cancer care providers and the continuum of care. The Infusion RN will coordinate patient care and implement patient specific treatment plans ordered by physicians. Provides effective education, educational resources, and support to patients and their families. Utilizes nursing skills to determine the biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care and educational needs of the patient/family/significant other and work with the patients entire care team to advocate on the patient’s behalf. Contributes to the educational process for patients, staff and self. Promotes clinical effectiveness, efficient use of resources, and quality care in practice setting.
