About The Position

The infusion nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient’s course of infusion therapy. The infusion nurse is also expected to administer research medications, as required. This role involves floating to different office locations as needed for staffing. The nurse will review patient charts, obtain medical history, check vital signs, review labs and medications. They will provide infusion therapy safely and competently, monitor patients, and respond to changes or emergencies. Responsibilities include inserting IV catheters, accessing implanted ports, administering injections, and performing phlebotomy. The nurse will educate patients and families about biologic treatments, medications, their mechanisms of action, and potential side effects. Scheduling patients, communicating with staff, and staying current with government and insurance program policies are also key duties. The role requires adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and company compliance policies, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials and maintaining patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • RN and DC RN License
  • BLS Certification
  • Current RN license in DC, VA, MD (depending on location of hire)
  • Minimum: 1 year of direct patient care in an inpatient setting, preferably critical care.
  • Knowledge of indications of therapy, pharmacologic actions, interactions, side effects and monitoring of parameters.
  • Understanding of drug calculations.
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions used to establish and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice developed by Infusion Nurses Society (INS) and adheres to the Standards of Practice.
  • Skilled in IV catheter insertion and implanted port care.
  • Skilled in obtaining vital signs.
  • Skilled in maintaining clear and concise notes in the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to examine documents for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, other staff members, and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the department.
  • Ability to think critically in the clinical setting.
  • Work independently with off-site supervision.
  • Maintains current licensure and certifications necessary to perform duties and legally practice in the state(s) licensed.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS Certification, preferred
  • IV catheter insertion competency and infusion therapy experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient’s course of infusion therapy.
  • Administering research medications, as required.
  • Reviewing patient chart to ensure that physician’s orders are up-to-date and insurance authorization has been obtained prior to patient arrival to office.
  • Obtaining brief medical history, checking vital signs, reviewing labs and reviewing patient’s list of medications.
  • Providing infusion therapy in a safe and competent manner.
  • Monitoring patient and promptly reporting changes in the patient’s condition or emergencies.
  • Inserting peripheral intravenous catheters, accessing implanted ports, administering injections, and performing phlebotomy, as needed.
  • Providing educational information to patient and patient’s family regarding biologic treatments.
  • Instructing patient about biologic medications, mechanism of action, and potential side effects.
  • Scheduling patients for infusion therapy and office visits.
  • Communicating with providers and other staff members, as appropriate.
  • Remaining current with the policies mandated by both federal and local governments, Medicare/Medicaid programs, and other private health care programs regarding handling of laboratory work.
  • Attending Departmental Meetings.
  • Performing related work as required.
  • Participating in the development and general adherence of policies and procedures related to infusion therapy and nursing care within the department.
  • Floating to other sites, as appropriate, for staffing needs in the department.
  • Maintaining current licensure and certifications necessary to perform duties and legally practice in the state(s) licensed.
  • Adhering to all ARA and ARISE Policies and Procedures.
  • Following compliance requirements mandated by OSHA.
  • Following compliance policies of ARA.
  • Following compliance requirements pertaining to collection and handling of laboratory specimens including, but not limited to, collection, temperature, containers, and proper disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Following HIPAA guidelines for maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to honest and responsible corporate conduct.
  • Identifying, reporting and/or preventing any fraudulent or unethical behavior.
  • Notifying management if inappropriate behavior is observed within the organization.
