The infusion nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient’s course of infusion therapy. The infusion nurse is also expected to administer research medications, as required. This role involves reviewing patient charts to ensure physician orders are up-to-date and insurance authorization has been obtained prior to patient arrival. The nurse will obtain medical history, check vital signs, review labs and current medications. They will provide infusion therapy safely and competently, monitor patients for changes in condition or emergencies, and insert peripheral intravenous catheters, access implanted ports, administer injections, and perform phlebotomy as needed. Patient and family education regarding biologic treatments, medications, mechanisms of action, and potential side effects is also a key responsibility. The role includes scheduling patients, communicating with staff, staying current with government and insurance program policies, attending meetings, and performing related duties. The nurse must adhere to Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice, maintain electronic medical records, and possess strong communication and critical thinking skills. They may also be required to float to other sites for staffing needs and maintain current licensure and certifications.
