About The Position

Victaulic is seeking an Infrastructure Estimating Engineer for its Infrastructure Support Team within Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Estimating. Reporting to the Manager, Estimating – VDC, this role owns Infrastructure Tech Review—the technical readiness and risk gate for infrastructure estimating. The engineer determines whether opportunities are ready to estimate, interprets specifications, identifies technical and commercial risks, and applies engineering and fabrication judgment to improve scope clarity, pricing confidence, and pursuit quality before material takeoff hours are committed. The primary focus is estimating support rather than project execution. The role is expected to grow into a senior Infrastructure estimating leadership position, with greater influence over estimating strategy and long-term ownership of the Infrastructure estimating business. The position reviews U.S. and Canadian infrastructure projects involving ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. It evaluates scope requirements, exclusions, compliance needs, fabrication feasibility, and risks; defines estimating assumptions and scope boundaries; determines whether modeling or document-only estimating is appropriate; and assigns required material takeoff hours. The engineer coordinates with Sales, PMD, Fabrication Quality Assurance and Quality Control, the estimating team, and other functions as needed. The role also maintains an Infrastructure Estimating Risk Log and uses the VDC artificial intelligence Spec Agent to support specification interpretation and produce standardized reports. Secondary support may include limited subject matter guidance, targeted quality checks, advice to VDC infrastructure coordinators, and assistance with non-Victaulic submittals, provided these activities are coordinated so they do not compete with estimating priorities. Day-to-day VDC project execution and ownership of fabrication, shop production, or project deliverables are outside the role's scope.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in engineering, fabrication, or water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Strong ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and industry standards, including American Water Works Association standards.
  • Demonstrated judgment in identifying technical and commercial risk and translating engineering detail into estimating and business impact.
  • Confidence to push back on Sales with clear reasons and influence decisions without direct ownership.
  • Comfort learning and using software tools used in Tech Review and specification review.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel piping systems, coatings and linings, and pipe fabrication.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent job experience.
  • Experience with shop prefabrication, American Water Works Association Manual M11, welding and nondestructive examination requirements, and American Iron and Steel and Build America, Buy America compliance.
  • Familiarity with Canadian infrastructure codes and standards.
  • Prior experience in estimating or pre-construction.

Responsibilities

  • Decide whether an estimating request is complete enough to estimate or should be put on hold or returned to Sales.
  • Determine whether work requires modeling or document-only estimating and assign the material takeoff hours needed.
  • Define scope boundaries and assumptions that Sales must clarify.
  • Identify technical and commercial risks affecting bid/no-bid decisions, margin, or pursuit strategy, and escalate when appropriate.
  • Review U.S. and Canadian project specifications for requirements, exclusions, and risk drivers across ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel projects.
  • Assess requirements relating to American Water Works Association standards, coatings and linings, materials, pressure and reinforcement, nondestructive examination and radiography, passivation, Professional Engineer-stamped procedures, American Iron and Steel compliance, Build America, Buy America compliance, and fabrication feasibility.
  • Raise risks during Tech Review and coordinate with Fabrication Quality Assurance and Quality Control on risks or red flags that could change quote status.
  • Maintain the Infrastructure Estimating Risk Log, including an owner, status, and mitigation for each active item.
  • Use the VDC artificial intelligence Spec Agent to support specification interpretation and produce a standardized report.
  • Serve as Sales' primary technical contact during pursuits, owning technical issues and clarifications and returning incomplete or unclear requests for clarification.
  • Act as the point of contact with PMD for questions such as American Water Works Association Manual M11, wall calculations, and reinforcement calculations, and incorporate the results into the review.
  • Hand off qualified, scoped requests with assigned hours to the estimating team.
  • As coordinated with estimating priorities, provide limited subject matter support on American Water Works Association standards, coatings and linings, fabrication shop capabilities, and project-specific piping questions.
  • As needed, perform targeted flow, layout, FAB MAP, and spool checks.
  • Advise VDC infrastructure coordinators without assuming execution or delivery ownership.
  • Assist Project Execution and Fabrication with non-Victaulic submittals.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Quality as needed.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with performance-based incentives.
  • Career development programs and internal promotion pathways.
  • Tuition reimbursement and continuous learning opportunities.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement savings plans with company match.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Flexible work arrangements where applicable.
  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and wellness resources.
  • Inclusive, team-oriented culture.
