Infrastructure Architect (Modernization)

Strategic Growth Partners•Washington, DC

About The Position

Strategic Growth Partners is recruiting an Infrastructure Architect for its client, a leading global professional services firm. The role sits within the Corporate Performance Improvement practice and leads large-scale infrastructure and network modernization, hosting and cloud-readiness assessments, and architecture transformation. The candidate should have experience redesigning enterprise infrastructure at scale, rather than only optimizing existing environments, and be knowledgeable about current infrastructure technology transformation trends. The architect will assess infrastructure and develop modernized target architectures for cloud-native, hybrid, or optimized on-premises environments. Designs must align with mission needs, security accreditation constraints, and migration roadmaps. The role also develops phased cloud migration and automation strategies, assesses dependencies on application and enterprise-service modernization, and contributes infrastructure findings to broader client engagements. The position involves up to 80% travel, including on-site work as required, and requires an active Top Secret clearance, U.S. citizenship, and physical residence in the United States. SCI eligibility is preferred where required by an engagement. Compensation is an hourly rate determined by experience.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of professional experience in infrastructure architecture for complex, large enterprises, with consulting or advisory delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading infrastructure modernization, cloud migration, or large-scale transformation programs.
  • Active Top Secret clearance; SCI eligibility where required by an engagement is preferred.
  • U.S. citizenship and physical residence in the United States.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Comfortable traveling up to 80%, including on-site work as required.
  • Ability to meet DoD information system access and training requirements, including annual cyber awareness training and, where applicable, DoD 8140 workforce qualification requirements.
  • Experience across data center architecture, infrastructure consolidation, and legacy system modernization at enterprise scale; government or defense computing-center consolidation is relevant.
  • Cloud readiness assessment, migration planning, and hybrid or multi-cloud architecture experience involving AWS, Azure, GCP, or Oracle, including the DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide.
  • Enterprise network and transport architecture experience involving MPLS, SD-WAN/SASE, satellite and cloud-provider transport, and legacy TDM circuit retirement across NIPR, SIPR, and other classified networks.
  • Virtualization strategy and optimization experience across compute, storage, and hyperconverged infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code, automation frameworks, and CI/CD pipeline architecture experience in accredited government environments.
  • Legacy application assessment, refactoring strategies, and containerization or Kubernetes readiness experience.
  • Storage modernization, database migration, and data architecture consolidation experience.
  • Infrastructure security modernization and compliance mapping experience, including DoD Zero Trust Reference Architecture, RMF, NIST SP 800-53 controls, DISA STIGs, and cross-domain considerations.
  • Capacity planning, performance baseline analysis, and infrastructure cost modeling experience.
  • Baseline competency with AI-assisted tools and ability to explain how AI can accelerate infrastructure analysis and optimization.
  • Vendor evaluation, negotiation, and optimization of infrastructure contracts and commercial agreements.
  • Working knowledge of federal contracting requirements, including FAR and DFARS.
  • Ability to work across infrastructure, security, operations, and partner teams.

Nice To Haves

  • DoD or federal infrastructure environment experience, including direct experience with DoD infrastructure standards and mission partner environments such as military departments, combatant commands, and defense agencies.
  • Deep modernization experience in another regulated industry, such as financial services or healthcare, may substitute for DoD or federal experience.
  • Cloud certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect or Azure Administrator.
  • Infrastructure and security certifications such as CISSP, CCNP, or ITIL Master, or equivalent certifications.
  • Certifications satisfying DoD 8140 workforce requirements.
  • Experience designing and leading large-scale infrastructure and network modernization programs, and understanding the dependencies between infrastructure readiness, application modernization, and security accreditation.
  • Experience designing hybrid and multi-cloud environments without presuming a specific platform, and defining outcomes and open standards rather than mandating individual products.
  • Ability to collaborate across Digital and Technology Services and Corporate Performance Improvement teams, bringing technology advisory and delivery capability into client engagements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead infrastructure assessment and baseline analysis, including topology mapping, capacity utilization, performance bottleneck identification, and cost analysis.
  • Design modernized target infrastructure architectures—cloud-native, hybrid, or optimized on-premises—in alignment with mission requirements, security accreditation constraints, and cloud migration roadmaps.
  • Assess cloud readiness, identify gaps in skills, tooling, and governance, and develop phased migration strategies with sequencing logic, representative customer testing, and exception handling before cutover.
  • Develop infrastructure automation and Infrastructure-as-Code implementation roadmaps to reduce manual work and improve deployment velocity.
  • Evaluate dependencies among infrastructure modernization, application refactoring, enterprise service migrations, and broader digital transformation initiatives.
  • Integrate infrastructure findings into the client’s broader engagement scope and deliverables, partnering with Digital and Technology Services and other practices.
  • Support practice development through internal training, content creation, and people development.
  • Apply AI-assisted infrastructure analysis to accelerate infrastructure assessment and optimization.
