The salary range above represents the earning potential for this position. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $89,721.00 - $117,928.84, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Montgomery County Public Libraries is seeking a highly motivated IT Specialist III , Grade 26. This role is a key professional responsible for information technology management of MCPL systems with a focus on endpoint management, server maintenance, hardware and software administration, vendor and ticket management. THIS RECRUITMENT WILL GENERATE A 6-MONTH ELIGIBLE LIST TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES FOR THE PART-TIME IT TECHNICIAN III SUBSTITUTE AT ALL LOCATIONS WITHIN MCPL. Successful Candidates: Provide full performance professional level information technology work within Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL). Serves as a primary technical resource for endpoint management, hardware and software administration, server maintenance, and Active Directory management across all library locations. Provides hands-on technical support and exercises independent judgment in resolving complex system issues. Contacts include library IT technicians, branch and administrative staff at all levels, vendors, and Montgomery County Government technology staff to exchange information, offer technical guidance, and resolve problems. Ability to perform with considerable independence, technical soundness, adherence to policy, and alignment with library and County standards. Ability to use good judgment and resourcefulness, adapt procedures as needed, and recommend improvements to methods, tools, and policies governing IT operations. Requirements

Three (3) years of professional experience in information technology, including experience in endpoint management, desktop support, system administration, or a closely related area.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science , Information Technology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+; Microsoft certifications such as Azure or Cloud-related credentials; ITIL Foundation) may be considered in combination with experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
For applicants possessing very hard-to- find skills which are a critical need to the department/agency, training and certification may be accepted in lieu of full degree requirements.
Ability to lift boxes containing computer support items and equipment such as printers, computers, modems, and monitors weighing up to 50 pounds.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C (or equivalent) driver's license from the employee's state of residence may be required for travel between library locations.
This position requires completion of a pre-employment medical history form to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Plans, configures, deploys, and maintains all library endpoint devices, including staff and public-access computers, laptops, and associated peripherals across all MCPL locations.
Manages endpoint imaging, software packaging, and automated deployment using enterprise tools (e.g., SCCM, Intune, or equivalent).
Monitors endpoint health, enforces security baselines, and ensures all devices meet Montgomery County patch and compliance standards.
Maintains accurate inventory of all hardware assets; coordinates procurement, refresh, and disposal in accordance with County policies.
Troubleshoots and resolves hardware and software failures at the endpoint level; escalates complex issues to appropriate county or vendor resources.
Reviews, triages, and assigns incoming IT service requests submitted through ServiceNow to appropriate IT Technicians based on priority, complexity, and technician availability.
Monitors ticket queues to ensure timely resolution in accordance with service level expectations; escalates unresolved or high-priority issues as needed.
Provides technical guidance and quality review for work performed by lower-level IT Technicians; identifies training opportunities and coaching needs.
Documents recurring issues and contribute to the development of knowledge base articles and standard resolution procedures.
Performs general maintenance, monitoring, and administration of library-assigned servers, including patching, performance monitoring, backup verification, and log review.
Coordinates scheduled maintenance windows and communicate planned outages to branch and administrative staff.
Assists with server configuration, updates, and troubleshooting in coordination with Montgomery County OIT and MCPL IT leadership.
Supports backup and disaster recovery procedures; tests restoration processes to ensure data integrity and system continuity.
Administers and maintains Active Directory objects including user accounts, computer accounts, groups, and organizational units in support of MCPL operations.
Manages Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to enforce desktop configurations, security policies, and software settings across library endpoints.
Processes onboarding and offboarding tasks including account creation, permission assignment, and access revocation in a timely manner.
Conducts periodic audits of directory objects, group memberships, and access rights to maintain security and compliance.
Maintains and administers all library computer hardware and software, including installation, configuration, licensing compliance, and lifecycle management.
Evaluates new hardware and software solutions; provides recommendations based on compatibility with existing infrastructure and alignment with organizational needs.
Develops and maintains technical documentation including system configurations, installation procedures, and operational runbooks.
Coordinates with vendors on warranty claims, software support, and procurement; ensures license compliance and proper asset documentation.
Supports security and compliance initiatives by applying patches, managing antivirus/EDR solutions, and remediating vulnerabilities on schedule.
