About The Position

The Infection Preventionist position is responsible for decreasing the incidence and transmission of infectious diseases among patients, staff, visitors, and the community. This role involves strategic planning, leadership, and consultation to guide the infection control committee in setting and achieving infection prevention goals and objectives throughout the facility. The Infection Preventionist reports to the Director of Nursing and collaborates with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) and Medical Director to establish a care system that upholds sound and scientific infection prevention principles and practices.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing School.
  • Current and valid RN/LVN/LPN license in the applicable State.
  • Minimum of one-year supervisory experience in a long-term or health care setting is preferred.
  • Must complete Infection Preventionist Course and obtain certification.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from department heads, customers (Patients, family members, physicians, etc.) and the general public.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
  • Must have the ability to adhere to strict deadlines.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and review telephone orders for antibiotics, pre-assessments for suspected infections, medication and treatment administration records, and individual infection control surveillance forms/assessments daily for accuracy, completion, required documentation, and appropriate intervention.
  • Lead the Antibiotic Stewardship Daily Meeting and document minutes.
  • Conduct Antibiotic Time-Out for all antibiotics 72 hours after the first dose.
  • Prepare required monthly reports.
  • Check Glucometer and Refrigerator Temperature Logs.
  • Track and trend C. Difficile diagnoses using the C.Diff Tracking Worksheet.
  • Observe infection control practices for staff daily and provide on-the-spot education as necessary, focusing on Hand Hygiene, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) donning/doffing, and point-of-care testing (glucose, antigen).
  • Complete one observation worksheet per week, per category (5 systems = 5 observation sheets).
  • Maintain worksheets in the IP Observation binder and provide copies to HR for submission in CantexU.
  • Participate in the Stand-up Review of the 24-hour report, looking for changes in condition/potential infections.
  • Review medical records to ensure assessments, interventions, documentation, and notifications (Provider/Medical Director) were completed appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Manage patient and employee immunizations.
  • Ensure timely testing and documentation for TB testing and Flu/Pneumonia vaccines.
  • Enter physician orders, if applicable.
  • Provide required bi-monthly in-services and additional in-services based on identified needs.
  • Work with HR to assign CantexU courses as needed.
  • Complete recommendations from Pharmacy within 72 hours of receipt.
  • Complete recommendations from Registered Dietician within 72 hours of receipt.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
