About The Position

Under limited supervision, the Industrial Safety Specialist II (IS) is responsible for implementing and administering industrial safety programs affecting employee, public safety and occupational health. Serves as a resource for line management to administer a proactive prevention program for occupational accidents and illnesses; under general supervision performs technical work in a wide range of IS disciplines to achieve compliance with ES&H standards along with federal and state regulatory requirements; exhibits knowledge and applies fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of IS; assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of IS programs, systems and procedures; monitors and prevents hazards and diseases that could be found in the work area; investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace; actively supporting implementation of WTCC Safety Culture improvement and the WTCC Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) improvement actions, assessments and annual reports. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related science or engineering discipline.
  • BS + 5 yrs related experience or MS + 1 yrs related experience
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Amentum visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.)

Nice To Haves

  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Preferred.
  • Experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing or petroleum refining environment is preferred
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements .

Responsibilities

  • Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment.
  • Provides technical assistance to office and field operations to ensure compliance with applicable international, Federal, State, and/or Company health and safety regulations.
  • Conducts compliance evaluations of equipment, structures, and work in progress to ensure that regulatory environmental, safety and health standards of the Company and all applicable codes are followed.
  • Recommends facilities and technological specifications to carry out programs that fulfill the organization's overall objectives.
  • Identifies workplace hazards throughout operations and maintenance activities in an operating industrial facility.
  • Develops appropriate hazard controls and mitigation strategies and provides oversight of work activities to ensure controls are effectively implemented.
  • Supports worker safety and health needs, including injury and event response and case management.
  • Ensures effective implementation of safety and health rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Support the Hanford Traffic Safety Committee through meeting participation and feedback
  • Performs incident/event investigations and prepares associated reports.
  • Maintains current knowledge of specific government agency requirements.
  • Oversee the Executive Safety Councils, Zero Accident Committees, and employee committees with initiatives, employee campaigns, and recognition mechanisms.
  • Lead company-wide Voluntary Protection Program initiatives, activities, and campaigns.
  • Assists with the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health programs, systems and procedures.
  • Prepares and reviews technical reports, correspondence, and program compliance documents.
  • Perform preparation and assessments in support of the VPP Self-Assessment and DOE VPP Assessment.
  • Assists in the development of IS training programs and conducts IS training meetings as necessary.
  • Performs analysis of IS data.
  • IS Specialists are expected to pursue and/or complete a professional certification, such as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
