About The Position

This position operates with a high degree of independence within broadly defined organizational goals established in collaboration with the Department Chair. The incumbent applies advanced knowledge of specialized instrumentation and complex equipment to establish priorities, resolve technical issues, and support laboratory operations. Responsibilities include managing service contracts, advising on equipment acquisition, administering a position-related budget with purchasing authority, and providing oversight and training to student assistants. The incumbent also ensures compliance with departmental safety policies through inspections, upgrades, and coordination with faculty and safety personnel. The position provides technical support through design, prototyping, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of complex electro-mechanical equipment for instructional and research needs. The incumbent is responsible for diagnosing and resolving equipment malfunctions and applies engineering design principles and practical experience to support faculty and student projects. In addition, the incumbent supports the operation of a wide range of manufacturing and prototype equipment, including systems related to foundry, welding, machining, electronics manufacturing, metrology, industrial automation, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The position supports daily operation of instructional equipment serving over 500 students. This role is essential to maintaining and improving laboratory systems. The incumbent independently develops tooling, installs and configures equipment and software, and performs upgrades and overhauls to support instructional and research objectives.

Requirements

  • Highly skilled general all-around electrical and mechanical mechanic requiring little supervision.
  • Ability to read and make orthographic drawings.
  • Read and understand electrical and electronic control circuit drawings and independently perform related work and repair.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, find information, and experiment with complex, custom equipment that is without simple repair instructions.
  • Ability to design and fabricate new tooling and equipment components for custom and research-based equipment.
  • Read and understand hydraulic drawings and independently perform service and repair work.
  • General All-around Prototype Machinist - Set up and run both conventional and CNC lathes, conventional and CNC vertical and horizontal milling machines, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, tool and cutter grinders, band saws, drill grinder, shaper, sheet metal equipment, write and install/proof CNC programs, set up and run welding equipment including GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, plasma, resistance, sub-arc, spray-arc.
  • Rework or manufacture new machine parts/fasteners such as pins, shafts, collars, helical gears, slides, etc.
  • Repair and overhaul vacuum systems.
  • Equivalent to three years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.
  • Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
