About The Position

The Industrial Hygiene Technician supports the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Center of Excellence (COE) function by assisting in the identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards within Hexion’s chemical manufacturing environment and Research and Development (R&D) laboratories. This role conducts exposure monitoring, maintains sampling and direct-reading equipment, collects and documents data, and supports regulatory compliance initiatives to help ensure a safe and healthy workplace for employees and contractors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or EHS in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Industrial chemical industry or oil and gas refinery experience is preferred, and a combination of formal health and safety training will be considered.
  • Experience using industrial hygiene sampling equipment and direct-reading instrumentation preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and exposure limits, including OSHA PELs and ACGIH TLVs.
  • Willingness to obtain or actively pursue CIH designation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and be self-directed at times.
  • Ability to work around process equipment, noise, heat, confined spaces, and chemical handling activities.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators.
  • Working knowledge of respiratory protection, hearing conservation, heat stress prevention, hazard communication, and medical surveillance programs.
  • Ability to communicate monitoring results, field observations, and practical control recommendations to site personnel and EHS leadership.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of exposure records, employee notifications, monitoring reports, and supporting documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct personal and area air monitoring and sampling for process operators, maintenance personnel, laboratory employees, and contractors for chemical vapors, dusts, mists, and other airborne contaminants. (25%)
  • Perform noise dosimetry, sound level measurements, heat stress monitoring, ventilation assessments, and ergonomic evaluations in manufacturing, warehouse, terminal, laboratory, and maintenance work areas. (15%)
  • Utilize, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial hygiene sampling equipment and direct-reading instruments, including PID monitors, multi-gas meters, particulate monitors, sound level meters, and noise dosimeters. (15%)
  • Spend significant field time identifying occupational health hazards, verifying exposure controls, and supporting practical recommendations with operations, maintenance, engineering, and EHS teams. (15%)
  • Support industrial hygiene activities during maintenance outages, catalyst changeouts, vessel entry activities, contractor-intensive projects, and other non-routine work. (10%)
  • Maintain exposure monitoring databases and assist in preparation of employee exposure notifications, industrial hygiene records, monitoring reports, and regulatory documentation. (10%)
  • Support occupational health programs including respiratory protection, hearing conservation, heat stress prevention, hazard communication, medical surveillance, training, and incident investigations related to actual or potential occupational exposures. (10%)
