Industrial Hygiene Consultant
About The Position
The Industrial Hygiene Consultant in Public Health Preparedness and Response supports statewide public health emergency readiness by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental hazards that may emerge during terrorist events, disease outbreaks, or natural disasters. The position provides technical assistance to statewide preparedness partners and operates with substantial independence in assessing and addressing environmental threats. Work involves applying industrial hygiene practices to protect responders and the public during emergency situations and ensuring coordinated hazard‑related support for public health response agencies. The role functions within a dynamic, all‑hazards emergency preparedness context requiring strong self‑motivation and sound professional judgment.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene inspections OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Documented experience applying emergency management principles, including incident command system practices and hazard assessment frameworks, in public health preparedness scenarios.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply technical concepts related to toxicology, microbiology, infectious diseases, respiratory protection, and PPE selection within hazard assessment and response operations.
Responsibilities

- Recognize and evaluate public health threats to determine severity and identify appropriate control strategies.
- Control environmental hazards by recommending or applying mitigation measures within emergency response operations.
- Provide technical assistance to statewide public health preparedness systems and partner response agencies.
- Perform industrial hygiene activities independently across varied public health and emergency management settings.
- Communicate hazard assessments clearly to emergency management partners and response teams.
- Contribute environmental hazard expertise to statewide preparedness planning and coordination efforts.
- Apply industrial hygiene principles during emergent incidents to protect response personnel and the public.
- Respond rapidly to evolving emergency conditions requiring immediate hazard evaluation and action.
