About The Position

Help make UAMS a safer place to work, learn, and receive care. As an Industrial Hygiene Officer, you’ll investigate potential hazards across campus and turn your findings into practical solutions. Your work will help protect employees, students, patients, and visitors from risks involving air quality, chemicals, biological agents, noise, confined spaces, lighting, and ergonomics. Bring your technical skills and sound judgment to a role where your recommendations can make a direct difference across the UAMS campus.

Requirements

Associate degree in science, engineering, chemistry, safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field preferred, PLUS four (4) years of experience PLUS two (2) years of supervisory experience
Ability to evaluate a range of occupational settings
Safety-related field experience and computer experience
Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour initial training, followed by an eight-hour annual refresher (must be obtained during the first year of employment)
CPR/AED certification (must be obtained during the first year of employment)
Asbestos Inspector certification (must be obtained during the first year of employment)

Responsibilities

Lead indoor air quality and confined space programs: Respond to air quality concerns and water leaks, conduct testing, document exposure assessments, and explain potential hazards to the UAMS community. Develop and communicate safe confined space entry procedures.
Improve workplace ergonomics: Evaluate employee work areas and recommend changes that reduce physical strain.
Assess campus risks: Gather information from departments, evaluate higher-risk areas, recommend controls, document findings, and provide training on OSHA standards as requested.
Manage chemical and biological assessments: Identify potential exposures, conduct regular testing, recommend ways to reduce risk, and maintain assessment records.
Evaluate noise exposure: Identify areas with elevated noise levels, document assessments, and educate employees on ways to reduce exposure.
Assess campus lighting: Conduct lighting studies in indoor and outdoor spaces and recommend equipment changes.
Perform other duties as assigned.
