Industrial Engineering Manager

Anderson International Corp•Stow, OH

About The Position

The Industrial Engineering Manager is responsible for industrializing all Anderson-engineered products by converting released engineering designs into complete, accurate, cost-effective, and repeatable manufacturing processes. The manager leads the Industrial Engineering team and serves as the primary link between Design Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain regarding how products are built. The position owns the accuracy and maintenance of manufacturing routings and standards, leads design-for-manufacturability reviews, directs engineering dispositions of nonconforming product, and supports continuous improvement, 5S, and lean manufacturing efforts led by the Quality & Continuous Improvement department. The role oversees product routings, bills of material, raw material definitions and costs, tooling and fixturing requirements, work instructions, inspection requirements, and manufacturing standards in the ERP. It establishes methods and review schedules for standards, supports product costing and quoting, and leads make-versus-buy analysis, lot sizing, and safety-stock adjustments. The manager also supports supplier qualification, corrective action, capital equipment justification, plant layout changes, and new equipment launches. The manager hires, trains, and develops two Industrial Engineers; assigns and balances their workload across product lines and shifts, including third-shift support; and tracks department KPIs. The position participates in daily Gemba walks, represents Industrial Engineering in production and project meetings, supports the production floor, and provides technical guidance to operations leadership and CNC programmers. Work is split between an office and the manufacturing plant floor, including daily Gemba walks. The role involves exposure to typical manufacturing conditions, required use of safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes, and the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional third-shift presence and travel to suppliers and customers may be needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; equivalent hands-on manufacturing engineering experience will be considered.
  • At least 8 years of manufacturing or industrial engineering experience in a metalworking or capital equipment environment.
  • At least 3 years leading engineers or technical staff.
  • Knowledge of machining, welding, fabrication, assembly, heat treating, and grinding.
  • Experience building and maintaining routings and bills of material, setting labor standards, defining outside services and raw material, and supporting product costing.
  • Experience leading nonconforming material review and engineering disposition.
  • Experience with moderately large, fairly complex production of mechanical capital equipment.
  • Strong blueprint-reading and GD&T skills.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, such as SolidWorks or similar, and CNC programming concepts.
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems, including routing, bill of material, and costing functions.
  • Root-cause analysis and problem-solving skills; working knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S.
  • Proficiency in Excel and data analysis.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills; comfortable on the shop floor and presenting to leadership, able to hold people responsible and work across departments.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in the manufacturing plant environment and wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes.
  • Ability to provide occasional third-shift presence and travel to suppliers and customers as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an ETO, CTO, or low-volume, high-mix environment is strongly preferred.
  • Epicor experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Industrialize all Anderson-engineered products, including ETO, CTO, and MTS products, and establish and maintain master routings, raw material definitions, tooling, and fixturing requirements.
  • Lead formal design-for-manufacturability reviews with Design Engineering before drawing release, assessing manufacturability using company equipment, capabilities, and suppliers.
  • Identify, document, and track design-change recommendations that reduce cost, operations, setups, unnecessarily tight tolerances, or lead time without affecting form, fit, or function.
  • Lead make-versus-buy analysis for new and existing parts using capacity, cost, and lead-time data, and present recommendations to Operations and Supply Chain.
  • Ensure work instructions, fixturing, tooling, inspection requirements, and first-article review and closeout are defined for new products.
  • Own the completeness and accuracy of manufacturing routings and ERP standards, including operation sequence, work centers, run and setup times, outside services, and bills of material.
  • Help process Engineering Change Orders and ensure routings and standards are updated on time and affected work in process is updated or receives a final disposition.
  • Ensure raw material specifications, forms, sizes, cut lengths, quantities, and costs are correctly defined and current for manufactured parts.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain to define outside-service suppliers, specifications, lead times, and costs in routings.
  • Establish a documented method for setting standards on new work and a schedule for comparing standard to actual performance, prioritizing high-volume and high-variance parts.
  • Partner with Accounting on product costing, investigate standard-driven cost variances, explain them, and correct root causes.
  • Provide Sales and Estimating with documented labor, outside-service, and material estimates for new quotes and engineered orders.
  • Establish economic cycle quantities and regularly review and adjust minimum and maximum lot sizes as demand, setup times, and costs change.
  • Adjust safety-stock levels based on Sales forecasts in coordination with Supply Chain and Production Planning.
  • Lead engineering disposition of nonconforming product, ensuring deviations are documented and approved and dispositions address engineering justification, required rework or repair, product function, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure repair and rework work orders capture labor and material, and complete dispositions within the timeframe defined by the nonconforming material process.
  • Partner with Quality, Operations, and suppliers on root cause and corrective action; update drawings, routings, work instructions, and standards to prevent recurrence.
  • Track and report nonconformance trends by part, process, and supplier to drive engineering corrective action.
  • Assess and approve manufacturing control plans submitted by suppliers and help conduct supplier site audits for qualification to the Approved Supplier List.
  • Support continuous improvement, 5S, and lean manufacturing initiatives with industrial engineering resources, data, and analysis.
  • Provide engineering input on cycle time, setup reduction, flow, layout, ergonomics, safety, and quality improvements, and reflect resulting changes in routings and standards.
  • Provide engineering analysis for capital equipment justification, plant layout changes, and new equipment launches, including updates to routings and standards when processes move to new equipment.
  • Use labor reporting, scrap, variance, and throughput data to identify improvement priorities and verify results.
  • Hire, train, and develop two Industrial Engineers; set written priorities, assign ownership, and review performance against department KPIs.
  • Assign and balance the Industrial Engineering workload across product lines and shifts, including support for third shift.
  • Set, track, and report department KPIs, including routing completeness, standards accuracy, on-time release to production, nonconformance disposition time, and open nonconformance aging.
  • Attend the daily Gemba walk and contribute to immediate safety, manufacturing, and production priorities.
  • Represent Industrial Engineering in production, engineering, project, and ERP meetings, and escalate schedule, cost, or quality risks early.
  • Ensure the team supports manufacturing and production managers and direct labor with technical questions about drawings, work instructions, and equipment standard operating procedures.
  • Support the production floor directly and provide technical support and guidance to the Director of Operations, Manufacturing Manager, and CNC programmers.
