About The Position

General Motors is seeking an experienced Industrial Engineer to support manufacturing performance at our Lockport site. This role is ideal for a candidate who thrives in a fast-paced plant environment and can combine floor-based problem solving, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to improve safety, quality, responsiveness, cost, and throughput. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong shop-floor presence, partner closely with maintenance and operations, and lead continuous improvement efforts that deliver measurable results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant manufacturing experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, industrial engineering, process engineering, or continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated experience leading continuous improvement or problem-solving work with measurable impact on scrap, downtime, throughput, safety, or cost.
  • Strong analytical and data skills, including proficiency with Excel and comfort working with production, quality, and downtime data.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and drive results in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate technical findings into clear actions for the floor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GM production systems, Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, SMED, value stream mapping, or standard work.
  • Experience working in a union environment and collaborating effectively with hourly and salaried teams.
  • Familiarity with production metric tracking, CI countermeasure follow-up, and audit readiness practices.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar simulation software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, throughput, downtime reduction, cost improvement, and overall manufacturing performance.
  • Maintain a strong floor presence by attending shift meetings, reviewing production performance, checking business plan deployment metrics, and ensuring standards are being met in the assigned area.
  • Analyze production flow, labor utilization, downtime trends, bottlenecks, and process variation to identify and implement practical countermeasures.
  • Partner cross-functionally with production, maintenance, quality, supply chain, and skilled trades to resolve issues quickly and improve operating performance.
  • Support project follow-up, equipment and process changes, manufacturing readiness activities, and execution of improvements tied to plant priorities.
  • Use data and plant observations to recommend process changes, improve standard work, and drive sustainable results across the operation.
  • Influence teams without direct authority and build strong working relationships in a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • Mentor less experienced team members and serve as a technical resource across the manufacturing organization.
