About The Position

ZURU Tech is redesigning how homes are designed and built. The Industrial Designer will join the ZURU Tech Housing team in Los Angeles to design building components and establish rules for how those components fit together, enabling a building system that can be designed, manufactured and built around the world. The role suits a systems thinker who can turn complex requirements into simple, repeatable solutions. The products and design rules developed in this role will become parametric logic in ZURU software, generating components and configurations across homes built with the system. The Industrial Designer will collaborate with design, engineering, manufacturing and software teams in Los Angeles, Italy, China and New Zealand, working at the intersection of industrial design, architecture and manufacturing. Design improvements and simplifications can scale across the building system.

Requirements

  • Strong industrial design skills, including understanding of aesthetics, functionality, materials, user experience, and product manufacturing and assembly.
  • Proficiency with CAD, 3D modeling and rendering tools.
  • Understanding of residential construction and building codes, and ability to balance design intent with technical and manufacturing requirements.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and solve problems across disciplines, working with designers, engineers, software developers and manufacturers to turn complex requirements into practical solutions.
  • Systems thinking: ability to consider how products, rules and processes work together at scale.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or proficiency with Rhino, Grasshopper or similar parametric tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design architectural products that balance aesthetics, functionality and user experience with each component’s role in the wider building system.
  • Develop scalable product systems and design rules that balance design intent with building-code and manufacturing constraints.
  • Take products from concept through production in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing; develop, test and refine products and solve challenges along the way.
  • Translate design intent into parametric logic used by ZURU software to automatically generate products and configurations.
  • Build and maintain design standards, CAD templates and product guidelines to keep the system consistent.
  • Improve the design-to-production process so ideas reach the factory faster and more cleanly.
  • Simplify products and improve manufacturability by making parts simpler or more flexible where possible.
