About The Position

The Industrial Designer is responsible for providing product design solutions, while also providing limited guidance to the Junior Industrial Designer. They are responsible for managing the design activities, documentation, communications and deliverables related to the stage gate development process within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Providing insight and decisions on design-related issues in cross-disciplinary development discussions
  • Functioning with limited supervision in executing assigned projects
  • Working with outside consultants, design engineering and Product Management
  • Developing new products through a systematic process of stage gate activities and deliverables according to a predetermined launch schedule

Responsibilities

  • Provide design guidance to the Junior Industrial Designer to ensure product design intent, integrity and quality of execution as well as knowledge transfer throughout the development process.
  • Manage the development, deliverables, and communications activities between the (multi-disciplinary) project team members related to the industrial design activities to meet project objectives.
  • Contribute to the definition (design brief) and execution (often including outside collaboration) of the product design solution for new seating products, and to ensure its portfolio fit, design language, and performance requirements and meeting all design brief requirements.
  • Contribute to the advancement of professional practice of the industrial design specific to the evolving Seating development activities.
  • Provide guidance to internal and outside design consulting resources to ensure both the program requirements (deliverables, schedule, etc) and the design requirements (portfolio fit, aesthetics, comfort and performance etc) are met.
  • Ensure accurate and timely communication of all status and content issues between relevant stake holders in multi-disciplinary development team and design management.
  • Act as a representative of the Seating design department as part of the Teknion client experience.
  • Communicate and demonstrate all aspects of the product design through a series of different media appropriate to the stages of development including: sketches, renderings, development prototype models, CAD models, and slide development documentation and presentations.
  • Generate and document new product concepts and design language guidelines in response to Market and Design research activities of the evolving needs of the workplace that ultimately support the creation of the Design Brief or PDO.
  • Contribute directly to the Design Research activities through field observation, client interaction, Design Discovery Sprints, design insights activities.
  • Provide insight and decisions on all design related issues in the cross disciplinary development discussions to collectively solve new product issues including manufacturability, function, appearance, product application, CMF, product offering, testing, etc.
  • Function with limited supervision in executing the assigned projects, including decision making, working with outside consultants, design engineering and Product Management.
  • Develop new products through a systematic process of stage gate activities and deliverables according to a predetermined launch schedule.
