About The Position

Nucor Steel Lexington is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Industrial Automation Engineer. This role involves designing, implementing, and configuring new automation systems, upgrading older machinery to new control platforms, and enhancing existing manufacturing lines. The engineer will also be responsible for troubleshooting and modifying level 1 systems, including PLCs, HMIs, industrial communication networks, distributed remote I/O, drives and motor controls, and hydraulic controls. A key aspect of the role is performing deep analysis of failures in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and evaluating feasible solutions, including modifications to control logic. The position requires developing control systems using specific PLC and HMI platforms and programming packages. Additionally, the engineer will design and maintain network layouts for various protocols, develop an optical fiber network ring, and manage industrial process automation networking. Responsibilities include using specific software like Oracle ERP, Minitab, VBA, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and AutoCAD, as well as configuring and troubleshooting Windows Operating Systems, Networking, virtualization, and Databases for Control System Applications. The role also involves conducting training, developing standard operating procedures, increasing efficiency within level 1 automation systems, defining and approving engineering for new automation projects, and collaborating with maintenance and production teams. Developing automation system trainings and defining required spare parts, suppliers, and inventory levels are also part of the duties. Safety is paramount in this role, and candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Electrical, Electronic or Automation Engineering.
  • Two (2) years of industrial electrical maintenance and automation experience in the steel industry.
  • Experience with Oracle (equivalent to Enterprise Resource Planning "ERP" System), Minitab, VBA, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD.
  • Developing control systems utilizing programmable logic controller (PLC’s including S7 300, S7 400, S7 1515F)/Human Machine Interface (HMI) platforms including Siemens S7, TIA Portal, WinCC and programming packages.
  • Industrial process automation networking to connect equipment and devices for data communication and control (ie; Ethernet IP, Profinet, Profibus, Controlnet, etc.).
  • Configuring, troubleshooting and using Windows Operating Systems, Networking, virtualization and Databases for Control System Applications.
  • Designing, implementing, and configurating new automation systems, upgrading older machinery to new control platforms, and upgrading existing manufacturing lines.
  • Ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control systems utilizing programmable logic controller (PLC) such as (S7 300, S7 400, S7 1515F)/ Human-Machine Interface (HMI) platforms including Aveva Intouch, Allen-Bradley, Siemens S7, TIA Portal, WinCC and programming packages.
  • Design and maintain Network layouts/topologies for various protocols, including Profinet for Level 1 systems and TCP/IP for CCTV and level 2 systems.
  • Develop an Optical fiber network ring, as well as specified and maintained fiber types and accessories to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Responsible for Industrial process automation networking to connect equipment and devices for data communication and control (ie; Ethernet IP, Profinet, Profibus, Controlnet).
  • Responsible for using Oracle (equivalent to Enterprise Resource Planning "ERP" System), Minitab, VBA, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and use Windows Operating Systems, Networking, virtualization and Databases for Control System Applications to keep L2/L1 applications running and automation systems in order.
  • Responsible for conducting training and developing standard operating procedures.
  • Increase efficiency within level 1 automation systems and ensure the optimum performance of equipment for plant operations through continual improvement initiatives.
  • Define and approve all engineering for new automation projects (basic and detail).
  • Work closely with Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance and Production teams to optimize the processes and develop/implement future improvement plans.
  • Develop automation system trainings for teammates.
  • Define required spare parts for automation systems, develop suppliers and define inventory levels.
