About The Position

The Indirect Lending Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and decisioning indirect loan applications received through our dealer partners and strategic lending partners. This role evaluates credit risk, verifies borrower capacity and collateral quality, and exercises delegated lending authority to approve, counteroffer, or decline loan requests while balancing member experience, loan growth, and portfolio performance. The Indirect Lending Underwriter works closely with dealer partners, strategic lending partners, lending operations, funding, and management to ensure timely loan decisions, adherence to policy, and achievement of organizational growth objectives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience with consumer loan underwriting with one (1) year of experience in indirect lending underwriting.
  • Experience with auto loan underwriting and indirect dealer lending programs preferred.
  • Candidate should be capable of underwriting auto loans, understand credit risk and auto loan profitability.
  • Candidate need to be qualified to do so to explain credit decisions to dealers in a confident and professional manner either over the phone or through messaging.
  • Proficiency with computer programs including the full suite of Microsoft Office products and other standard office software.
  • Ability to develop ad hoc reports.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and use proper grammar in English.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures, financial reports, legal documents, and government regulations.
  • Proven ability to write business correspondence and write reports.
  • Proven ability to write business correspondence in response to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to speak effectively to members and dealers regarding sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and analyzes indirect loan applications, credit reports, collateral valuations, and related supporting information for dealer partner loans, refinance partner loans, auto leasing and other collaterals from our dealer partners.
  • Applies lending policies, underwriting guidelines, and delegated lending authority to approve, counteroffer, stipulate, or decline applications.
  • Evaluates borrower capacity, credit history, collateral, character, and overall risk profile.
  • Identifies compensating factors and exercises sound credit judgment when making lending decisions.
  • Distinguishes between patterns and anomalies within the context of the entire credit application to assess the creditworthiness of a borrower.
  • Documents all decisions, exceptions, conditions, and supporting rationale within the loan origination system.
  • Successfully underwrite all indirect products (Auto financing, Power Sports and Marine Loans, Leasing and Auto Refinance).
  • Communicates funding conditions, loan requirements, and lending decisions to dealer partner and strategic lending partners.
  • Assists with dealer relationship support by providing underwriting guidance and responding to escalated application questions.
  • Maintains established service level agreements (SLAs) for application review, dealer application questions and funding turnaround times.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal and state lending regulations, credit union policies, and indirect lending procedures.
  • Maintains adherence to fair lending, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), OFAC, and fraud prevention requirements.
  • Identifies potential fraud, identity theft, or suspicious application activity and escalates concerns appropriately.
  • Supports quality control reviews, audits, and portfolio monitoring activities.
  • Provides feedback regarding policy enhancements, automated decisioning strategies, and process improvements.
  • Supports portfolio growth initiatives while maintaining acceptable risk tolerance and delinquency performance.
  • Partners with Consumer Lending Sales, Operations, Loan Servicing, Collections, Fraud Prevention, and Compliance teams.
  • Assists with training and mentoring of junior underwriting staff.
  • Participate in departmental projects, system testing, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
