About The Position

The City of Indio Economic Development Department is looking for two highly energetic and motivated self-starters to serve in the position of Indio Business Connect Intern. Applicants get the opportunity to learn and develop skills in various areas including Business Welcome, Business Resource assistance, IBC Center Coordination, Business Tracking, Economic Development Exposure, Administrative Support, and Professional Development. This internship is a temporary position not to exceed 40 hours per week, with a typical work week of approximately 20 hours. Interns will have the opportunity to work flexible hours and select from a morning or afternoon schedule, within the days of Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and may include evenings and weekends depending on events. This internship is only open for currently enrolled College of the Desert Students.

Requirements

  • A completed online application must be submitted along with completion of the supplemental questionnaire.
  • A cover letter and resume must be attached to the application.
  • Must pass a criminal background screening
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required.
  • Associates degree or higher or some college and prior work experience
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekend events during city events

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact at the Indio Business Connect (IBC) Center by greeting entrepreneurs, business owners, and community members, providing information about available programs, services, workshops, and business resources.
  • Assist visitors with City and partner resources by answering general questions, directing them to the appropriate contact, and helping connect them with available resources.
  • Schedule conference rooms and meeting spaces for business workshops and partners. Maintain calendars and ensure booked spaces are ready for use.
  • Maintain records of visitor activity, including appointments with CVWBC and use of IBC Center.
  • Gain hands-on experience in municipal economic development by learning how local government supports business attraction, retention, expansion, entrepreneurship, and commercial revitalization efforts.
  • Assist with maintaining business resource materials, updating databases, and supporting the daily operations of the IBC Center.
  • Develop practical skills in customer service, business communications, office administration, data management, and public section operations while working alongside the Economic Development staff and community partners.
  • Attend a variety of City meetings, business workshops, networking events, and community outreach activities; may assist with taking notes and documenting action items.
  • Maintain visitor logs, room reservations, program registrations for walk-ins, and other records to support the reporting of IBC services.
  • Support outreach efforts by welcoming businesses, property owners, investors, and community partners visiting the IBC Center.
  • Assist in maintaining a professional, organized, and welcoming environment within the Indio Business Connect Center.
  • Gain exposure to business development workshops, programs, incentive programs, and economic development initiatives that contribute to the City's business growth strategies.
